There is no tidy fit. Traditional models of organizations did not try to account for relationships with other independent companies – each organization was considered a stand-alone. To the extent those relationships can be fitted into the established theories, different types of relationships might be considered as different things – some might be assets like goodwill (e.g., relations with elite prime vendors and distributors), some might be obligations, some might be part of the culture (e.g., the Firestone-Ford tradition up until the mid-1990s) following the AT&T dissolution), and some might simply be part of the policies of the current leadership (e.g., temporary alliances).
