How much can I expect to get back on my taxes?

I’m trying to get an estimate of how much I’ll get back in taxes come February 2012. I made less than $10,0, have 1 child, and have a 1098T to consider. My fiance and I moved in together in September and we’ve already agreed I’m claiming our child- can he claim Head of Household?

Thanks,

K

  • Full time student during any 5 month period of the tax year 2011 under the age of 19 or under the age of 24 and was still living in parents home for more than 6 months except for temporary absence while attending school would mean that you probably would still be a qualifying child of your parent on the correctly completed 1040 income tax return for the 2011 tax year so you really should consult with your parent before you do make any big decision and bad mistake for this 2011 tax year with this situation that you are now in at this time in your life.

NO he would NOT be able to qualify to use the HOH filing status for the 2011 tax year at all since you have asked this question at this time in your life.

And where were you and this child living from January 1 2011 until September of this 2011 tax year??

Whose home was it that you and child did live in at that time period?

And what is your AGE going to be on December 31 2011?

Hope that you find the above enclosed Information useful. 10/31/2011

  • To claim head of household he’d have to have a dependent who was a close blood relative, so no.

Not really enough info to say how much of a refund you’d get. Could be as much as around $50, if you qualify for EIC and the additional Child Tax Credit for your child, and the maximum refundable AOC education credit for yourself, or could be zero. Where did you live this year until September? With parents? How old are you? If they can claim YOU as a dependent, you can’t claim your child or an education credit.

  • In order to claim HOH, your fiance has to both pay for more than half the bills *and* have a qualifying child living with him for more than half the year. Unless your child was born in September after he moved in, he doesn’t meet the second test. You would be the only one who can claim the child and you will be filing as single.

As for how much your refund would be:

Single with one dependent, $0 income tax.

Additional Child Tax credit (if child under 17): $10.

    EIC, roughly $30.

Note, did pay tuition out of pocket? Did you have scholarships over and above tuition? OOP tuition for undergraduate degrees might get you a small education credit; scholarships over and above tuition would actually increase your income and cause you to owe tax.

  • He can’t claim HoH without the child. HoH requires a dependent. If he makes more money, he should claim the child and HoH. You made so little it’s pointless to claim the child.
