How much does a lip piercing hurt? (compared to nose or tongue?)?

Im pretty much set on getting one. Im just wondering what kind of pain to expect when getting it pierced. Ive gotten my tongue, nose and ears pierced plus Ive peirced my own ears. Of all of those getting my ears pierced in a shop hurt the worse!

I know it depends on each person. Can anyone compare a lip piercing with another peircing?

Worried about getting a lip piercing for the first time? Listen to my story!
Ever since I was 13 I wanted a lip piercing after seeing my friend had it done. I loved the way it looked. Just a normal lip ring, in the middle. Thats all I wanted. My parents were never an issue for me as my mum was very laid back and would let me do it, even given me permission, and even though my dad was very strict when it came to me, I believe he wouldn’t have kicked off if I had got it done at that point.

My main worry was the pain. As silly as it sounds. I have never been very good with any kind of pain. Let alone needles. Dentists, injections.. I couldn’t do it. No matter how much I wanted my lip pierced I couldn’t bring myself to go through with it.

I also had never got my ears pierced for this reason.

    But here is my experience:

It was a half term from school and I was 16. I went out into my small market town as usual to see if my friends were around, and of course they were. But something was different today. I was, once again, thinking about getting a lip piercing. I had enough money in my back pocket left over from my allowance.. Nothing was stopping me. But my terrible fear of needles and the pain that comes with it.

Sitting down with my group of friends I told them my thoughts. Of course they all tried to urge me to get it done, you know what teenagers can be like. But I was still ‘ummm-ing’ and ‘ahhh-ing’. Those of them that had had it done told me ‘It doesnt hurt.. as much as you think’… Which made it worse.

In the end, when all the hype about it had died down from my friends, my friend Elle told me quietly she would just walk with me to the piercing shop just so we could have a look, she wouldn’t force me to get it done like the others, she just knew I needed something else to make up my mind. So I went with her.

I walked into the shop and pretended to be looking at the tattoo art. A female piercer (unfortunatly cant remember names!) walked out and asked me if he could help. Elle blurted out that I was thinking of getting my tongue pierced. Then I was on a roll.

The poor lady got bombarded with questions. ‘Does it hurt?’ ‘How much does it hurt?’ … ‘Will it hurt for long?’. Fortunatly she wasn’t annoyed. She was extremely, extremely friendly and reassuring. Telling me I would obviously feel it, but as for pain she couldn’t give me an honest answer as it is always different for everyone. She then called out to a man, the other shops peircer. The shop was almost closing so they had time for a chat. He also reassured me. They thought I was hilarious because I was so nervous, but not in a patronising way. They were so friendly about it and understood completely.

The man told me I was old enough to get it done without parental permission, and if I wanted it done all I had to do was sign a paper and I could get it done on the spot. I just stood there with a stupid look on my face, thinking ‘Oh no the pain’. But then.. to my horror.. I found myself grabbing the paper from his hand and signing it with my eyes closed. (All the time my friend Elle going ‘Oh my god you’re getting it done! Yay!!’) He then took me too the room to do my piercing. Elle and the female piercer also came in for support.

So here I was. Sitting on the bench, saying how the place smelt like the dentists, trying to joke around to make myself less nervous. I was numb, shaking, and felt sick. The man marked my lip and asked me to check if I liked the place, I looked in the mirror, said I liked it and sat back down. Both the piercers could see how nervous I was and decided to just chat to me before getting on with it, I think they were trying to get me to trust them more. It worked. They ust chatted to me about random things, told me about their day and asked me about mine whilst the man sorted out the equipment. Then he stood there, ready to do it, and I heard the female piercer say ‘Change the needle, I think it brushed against your leg.’ I was amazed with how seriously they took the hygene. I was looking straight at the man and didn’t notice the needle brush against his leg at all, but they obviously were very careful and didn’t want to take any chances. He changed it, and it was ready.

The clamps didn’t hurt at all really, only just pulling my lip out. Here we go..

He told me to take a deep breath in, and then out. I breathed in and expected him to pierce as I breathed out, but he did it a litter later, just as I had finished breathing out. I was speechless. After he put the needle through, they asked me if I was okay and sounded quite worried as I hadn’t said a word, I didn’t even swear. But the only reason I was speechless was because I was so, so, SO surprised at how little it hurt. Seriously. All I felt was a miniscule prick and then a kind of burning sensation. The burning sensation was quite strong, but not a painful kind of feeling at all. Just all warm. I was speechless as I was waiting for the pain to come. I just sat there. In the end I managed an ‘I’m fine’. They were still worried about me (wrongly so!) but got on with putting the jewelery in. This part didn’t hurt at all, just felt abit tender, but not really any pain whatsoever. The man then told me he was finished and to have a look. I took one look in the mirror.. and then started talking for England. ‘Oh wow!! It looks amazing! Thanks you so much!! That didn’t hurt at all! I love it!! Thank you!!’ They started laughing, obviously glad I was okay after being so nervous. The man then sat me down and started talking to me seriously about aftercare, made sure I understood. Gave me a small leaflet about it and some solution stuff to put on the outside of my piercing. Told me to rinse and brush my teeth. I was bouncing off the walls while he was talking to me I was so happy!

Walking out of the shop they were joking with me like old friends, even though I was only a 16 year old strange girl. My friend Elle was joining in and was just as hyped up as I was. Elle was a massive help, held my hand all the way through!

I went back a few weeks later, following the aftercare instructions. My piercing healed beautifully, amazingly. No infections and hardly any pain. Once or twice it felt really tender and heavy, but this was minimal. The man commented I had taken care of it so well, he was confident I was ready to get myself as potted plant.. He changed my ring to something smaller, as the last one was too big for my lip, but that was incase of any swelling. Once again, they were so friendly and this didn’t hurt one bit. (I have a very small face and very small lips, so I had to get it changed again to a very very small ring a few weeks later.. they commented on how my face was the smallest they’ve ever pierced!)

All in all.. it was the most amazing experience. It didn’t hurt at all! I was so surprised as I am so so bad with needle pain. I am so so glad I have it now, a year later.

The main thing I remember was how professional yet friendly my piercers were. I strongly recomment No Doubt in Melton Mowbray, UK if you’re ever around there and fancy a piercing. They managed to get me through perfectly fine, they can get anyone through.

Fancy getting a lip piercing? Go for it! Even if it does hurt you abit more than it did me, it only lasts for two seconds or so, I swear!

Oh, and by the way, I still havn’t got my ears pierced 😛 But my tongue is next.. Eeep!

  • Piercing and tattooing is self-mutliation. Sorry, that is just my opinion.

  • Six.

  • Hurts just a little more than a nose piercing.

    Source(s):
Have my ears, cartilage, munroe, lip, nose and belly button pierced. I know the pain of piercings.

  • if u got tounge or nose u can handle it girl. it just feel like a pinch for 2 seconds. i have my nose bridge and that one didnt hurt.

  • The nipples are the die hard worse ever, ever, ever. Don’t do it unless you are sure sure sure you want it done. TRUST ME. The lip should be a sinch! Good luck! I want more piercings! 🙂

  • is not that bad not *** bad as your septum

  • Pain is sort of subjective it depends upon the individuals perception. If you are a stoic you might say this when you get pierced….” In the Distance i heard a SCREAM, it was not till later I realized the SCREAM was my own.”
If you are an Epicurian you might say “Dont come within 50 feet of me with that piercing instrument.” If you you are religious you might say whatever God wants God gets. But I think little pain goes with piercing because of the techniques they use more than chemicals. The real pain is preventing infection in the future and fighting the body trying to heal itself to keep the hole open. It is a tribal thing to do, I hope your are more intellegent then just following the croud.

  • Consider that there is great concentration of nerves around the mouth, so the odds of high discomfort level are high. The nose has far less nerves, so go ahead and put twice as many there to make up for the lip hooks. The tongue is all muscle, so the discomfort level should be between nose and lips.

  • A lip piercing wouldn’t hurt much. After all those, you’d be fine. The most painful one I’ve got is the tragus, and that’s only because my piercer didn’t do a great job on it.

  • The softer the skin, the more pain. Just like tattoos.

Your lips are soft skin, compare it to the tongue.

  • Because there are more nerve endings in your lip it will hurt more than your nose or tongue. It also depends on where on your lip you are getting it done and at what angle. If you are going for a straight piercing it will hurt less than say, an angels kiss, because that is at such an agle and closer to the surface of the lip. But, it doesn’t hurt as much as getting your nipples pierced or any of your genitals. So, hope that helps. Good luck and remember to always go to a clean shop that doesn’t re-use needles. And keep the piercing clean – an infected piercing can be horrible.

  • I had my lower lip pierced last Jan and felt no pain at all during the procedure. However, it swells up immediately and took some days to cool down. Also i had some trouble with eating as i wasn’t used to the big bar they put at first. But its not that bad really and it looks pretty nice. once you’ve done it, try putting salt water as frequently as possible and have mouth rinsings. this will speed up the process. Go for it!

  • the guy who did my nose told me the MOST PAINFUL piercing he has (he has them all) was his lip. BUT it depends on where. He had it done above his upperlip under his nose in the middle. he said any other lip piercing doesn’t hurt all that bad.
