How much energy would be saved if all the US changed to energy saving bulbs?

A few of us here were wondering how much would be saved if every household in the US changed to energy saving bulbs. Never mind the savings on the energy infrastructure because there would be less strain on it and less loss of revenue due to brown/blackouts and the money no longer needed to invest in the energy infrastructure’s future as consumption would have been reduced.

Update:

Assuming consumption did not change….

  • The extra energy spent to create and dispose of the enery-saving bulbs — including hazardous-waste cleanup — has been kept a secret. I suspect it’s pretty high relative to the energy saved during the active life of the bulbs themselves.

  • You are making an assumption. What if everyone switched to energy saving bulbs then left the lights on because they know the lights use less energy? There is no way to measure.
