They upgraded the computer from an XP Professional but it’s Vista now apparently. If I buy the Vista product key from Microsoft will it immediately start working and let me access my desktop or do I have to buy the XP professional or am I just out of luck.

the computer was originally XP but I guess he upgraded it himself so do I now buy the Vista product key or do I have to go back to XP

Usually if you buy it from Microsoft after a failed activation they will activate it right away for you.
you should reinstall xp professional or vista keeping the files intact with a LEGIT CODE.
i’m pretty sure xp is retired so you may want to check into if it’s legal to use a code you find on the internet to register your xp pro

u can buy a key from microsoft… this will give u acces to all features of windows….
or get a copy of xp/vista/windows , install it and start fresh!
Who sold you the illegal OS vista home premium you can get arrested/sued or w.e or what you can do is thel the cops.
