I’m entering highschool as a freshman, what can I expect?

I’m really nervous for high school. I’m not taking any AP or honors classes because I didn’t want to overwhelm myself with too much work (I’m most likely going to take a couple honors next year if its not that bad this year). I’m taking spanish and choir for electives and I’m trying out for the high schools drill team and I might join their creative writing club because I absolutely love to write and people say i’m good at it. I might do track later in the year too. Tell me your experience and what to expect!!! I’m terrified lol

  • Supplies:

a binder for each class, with dividers.

an “everything” binder to always have with you (homework, schedule, planner, etc.)

a whole punch that goes in your “everything” binder

loose notebook paper for all your binders (get lots + packs)

    a pencil bag with:

    mechanical pencils & led,

    colored pencils,

    pens,

    highlighters,

cheap spare pencils to loan out,

    Post-it notes

    WHITE OUT

    GUM GUM GUM

Then anything your teachers say you need (so maybe a notebook or folder) but, if they just want a folder for the class, I’d still get a binder.

I also always color coded everything. Now, for each class get a different color. Color coding your stuff will be super helpful I promise. designate each class a color and get everything for that class in that color. (EX: Math is yellow-get a yellow binder and yellow notebook or whatever your teacher wants) For your “everything/first day” binder-get a cute patterned one. If you can make your pencil bag match because these are the basic items you will always have. In your “everything” binder keep your schedule and agenda planner and homework, all important papers, etc. This is your take everywhere and don’t let it out of your sight tool but is super nice because you won’t have to take as much stuff home.

    Locker stuff:

First, get some locker racks and organizing boxes. Leave room for books too! A magnetic mirror for the door, those magnetic cups for your locker door too.

    Snack

    Makeup

    GUM

    perfume

    brush

    Nail clippers

    Duct tape

    ribbon or string

    Personal products

HAIR TIES (actually I’d keep that in your backpack)

    Basic Tips:

Depending on where your locker is, don’t go to it in between every class, it’s not needed. Carry everything for or classes at a time. Don’t be nervous-it’s not as scary as you think it will be. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you are lost ask a teacher or someone else. If your school lets you-go before school starts and walk your classes a few times and figure out the best routes. Get a map if the school has them and put it in your “everything binder”. Maybe even type out and print a simplified version of your schedule because those can be confusing sometimes. Memorize your locker combination before the first day. Get a Jansport big student backpack- they are great!

First day- Well if it’s like my school, you go in (if you don’t ride the bus make sure you get there early) and if you need to go to your locker, do so. Then just go to your homeroom/advisory (if you don’t have that then just your first class.) Listen to announcements. Usually the first day is where the teachers go over rules, expectations, homework policy, that stuff. Usually you don’t even have a seating chart the first day. Then you go to your next class and so on and so fourth. Lunch will probably be the most difficult part of the day. Usually lunch is split up into different “shifts” high school and all of the grades are combined. So that girl in English you really liked, might not be eating at your lunch so finding someone to sit with could be hard. My advice on this is to find someone in your class before lunch who has the same lunch and walk with them because also being Freshmen, you have no clue where to sit! Just find an open table. I also highly suggest packing the first day to avoid the lunch line. It’s really not bad after your first class, and once you tackle lunch you are good to go! It’s really scary walking into the building and into your first class but once you get through it you’ll laugh at yourself for being so nervous.

    Freshman Tips:

    # Don’t stop or stand in the middle of the hallway or be loud and obnoxious.

    # Be yourself! You will never make true friends unless you show them who you are!

    # Don’t be nervous. (Of course you’ll be nervous but try not to show it!) It’s not bad after st class.

    # Be prepared emotionally. You will learn a lot about yourself and about others and start seeing people for what and who they are and will have to decide if that is what you want in your life.

    # Make good, long lasting friends. They say you don’t go in with the friends you come out with that is very true. They also say your friends will change often. That doesn’t have to be true if you find the good ones to start.

    # DON’T LET YOUR GRADES SLIP! Stay on top of things and always do your homework.

    # Have fun. These are going to be the best years of your life so make them count.

    # Don’t let your “everything” binder out of your sight and USE IT!

Hope I helped! Best wishes love.

  • At your height and weight, you could be a really good LB. Your speed is not great, but if you are quick, your size at that position will allow you to take down the larger backs. Also, if your hand – eye coordination is strong, you will bat down your share of passes.

  • Just be yourself you’ll find a lot of people that will like you. At the first day you might be by yourself but later it will be more fun! 😀

  • Hey Alissa!

I completed my freshman year of high school just this past school year and am alive to tell the tale!

So, first of all, there is NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING to be nervous about! You’ll walk in, and I guarentee a week later you’ll look back and say to yourself “why was I even so nervous”? So just take a breath. It’ll all be okay:)

Good you’re trying out for extracurriculars! You like choir obviously cause you’re taking it for an elective, so you should try out for the school’s choir!

I did choir last year, as well as drama, junior council and badminton, and I loved every single second of it! I really suggest you do choir, track, writing club if you like it, (I love writing too!:DDD I wish we had one!) and ANYTHING else you’re interested in (even if your friends aren’t doing it) because its a good way to make new friends, and that’s where most of your fond memories will lie when you look back.

You won’t look back and say “I remember that one problem we had to solve in math class. That was great.” You’ll look back and say “I remember that one time in choir, when we were at the mall performing. We had two minutes left, and we all wanted to go to bulk barn for candy, so all of us just book it across the mall, and we almost ended up missing our bus!”

You are almost guarenteed to build amazing bonds with the people in those extra curriculars. Trust me.

Don’t worry about the work load! Expect some every night, but its not all that bad, okay? Just make sure you keep on top of all your studies, and don’t let anything else get in the way of them!

If you’re worried about there being drama, I wouldn’t worry about it. If you surround yourself with a nice group of friends who will support you and love you, then you can’t go wrong. If there’s a girl that tries to start something, don’t fuel the fire and don’t keep it going, just hold your head high and know that your far above it, and will not stoop down to their level to give them what they want. I did all this, and my year was pretty much drama free! Make friends and not enemies

Be happy, cheerful, fun and not too loud

Don’t hang all over boys. It looks and is wrong. You will also be just known as easy and taken advantage of.

If you’re worried about the seniors, don’t be. They won’t spray you with silly string as you walk down the hall like the media might make you think they to :). In fact, some of them may even become friends, or like big brothers and sisters. I met a lot through extra curriculars, they gave me lots of advice, and we all became attached. If you don’t give them a reason to hate you they won’t hate you. Promise 🙂

On that note, some expert advice the seniors gave me:

    – complete as many community service hours as you can in grade especially, but grade too if you couldn’t in grade . This way, it won’t get in the way of your work load in grade and

    – Don’t stand in the middle of the hall In large groups in the busiest hallways in the school, or walk really slow (they assured me I didn’t, but told me to tell some of my friends this in a nice way lol) because that’s a way to piss all the seniors off, plus it’s just really annoying

    – Live it up this year, as then you and all your friends will start getting jobs the following years, worrying about marks, colleges, universities, and you won’t have much time for anything like that

    – your marks ARE always important (they didn’t have to tell me twice though, lol)

    – don’t blink for a second, because it will be gone before you know it

Yeah, that last one was given to me by a senior boy I know with tears in his eyes on the last day of school, lol.

    Other assorted tips:

    – be organized: put your notes in order, put the dates on them, keep them together, highlight key points, etc. Trust me! I didn’t do this, and had to copy off of my friends notes, so you’ll thank me come exams

    – don’t be worried about “popularity” cause it doesn’t matter. I know girls who did this that had an awful time

    – no boy is worth losing a friend over, no matter how cute he is, lol.

    – some boys appear nice, but they turn out to be the opposite

    – smile a little 😉

    – this is school, not Jersey Shore. Bear this in mind while choosing the wardrobe. Don’t be one of thooossseee girls, lol. It may have been “cool” in elementary, but in high school, its “trashy”

Have lots of fun girl, good luck to you! <
