In the event of a global crisis, what would happen if..?

Say for example, World War III broke out or some economical disaster occurred and all Nuclear Power plants, Mass destructive weapons facilities and other such places were abandoned is there anything from stopping them from wreaking havoc? Like, with the Nuclear PP, with no-one to control it would it not eventually cause some sort of meltdown? I fear in the event of an impending global situation, the aftermath will be much worse that we already fear.

  • I don’t think this would be a problem, In the event World War III broke out the weapons facilities would always have a work force creating new weapons. In the event of a natural disaster or some sort of even that would make Nuclear power plants not viable in the new world, they would simply be shut down and the Fuel rods removed and placed into a radioactive storage area.
  • Current boiling water, solid fuel core reactors need active cooling for ten years before the fuel rods could be stored without additional power. If grid power were interrupted, in a matter of days as we’ve seen with Fukishima and Cheronobyl, the reactors would explode from the high pressure steam in a hydrogen explosion ( this actually doesn’t cause loss of containment ) and the fuel rods in the reactor and the cooling ponds ( which outnumber those in the reactor ) would catch on fire ( this does cause loss of containment ). Unlike the radioactive neutron activated isotope fallout of a nuclear weapon, the debris from the reactors would be transuranic and would be hazardous for thousands of years rather than the two days to two months from a nuclear bomb.

Don’t live north east of a nuclear reactor as that’s where the fallout will spread or better yet, move to Canada, fewer reactors and Canadian designs are slightly safer.

Note, you also have similar dangers from chemical storage in cryogenic tanks which you will find not only in chemical plants but welding shops, refrigeration plants and just about every industrial sector of a major city. After the grid fails, the tanks would eventually vent and you would have poisonous gas clouds drifting across the country side.

Fortunately, the probability of a complete break down of society is very very small.

  • Matts right. Operators of the plant can move the fuel rods to proper storage. Unless everything happened over night there would be no case that i can think of that would force a meltdown. I guess if everyone just upright abandoned a plant then yes, eventually they would meltdown if there wasnt enough water being pumped.

  • I would not worry. the safety fail systems in most things now will kick in, even if they don’t , by the time we realise it we wont be here

  • White people will flee to mars while they leave all the black people here back on earth!

  • I didn’t know this could be an issue until now.
