Informative speech on gun control — tips?

I’m writing an informative speech on gun control for a class assignment, and I’d like to know if anyone could give me some advice on how I’d go about doing this? I’d know how to write a persuasive speech on it; however, I’m unsure of how I should go about writing an informative speech on it. Any tips or things that I could bring up in my speech?

  • Ha ha, I liked JOTACAR’s answer. No bias there methinks…

Guns do not operate by themselves. So, gun control doesn’t make any sense.

Guns don’t need controlling, the attitudes and actions of people need controlling.

One sure way of doing this is to have access to the threat of force to dissuade a violent person from causing harm.

To accomplish that, you need to have ready access to a firearm…

  • First, when evaluating opinions and evidence, you’ll always have some biased idiot trying subtly to steer you one way or the other.
They use terms like “gun nuts” and insult the intelligence of the other side, implying that only the pro-gun control side has firm convictions while pro-Constitutional rights proponents lack thought, reason, and sense.

If, on the other hand, you want to be honest with yourself and others, look at the subject from the viewpoint of each side. Compare gun rights/gun control with other similar issues…prohibition, first amendment rights, etc.
Consider how effective law enforcement, or the lack of, has been. Use common sense and ask yourself if those little “No Guns Allowed” signs will really stop a criminal or nutcase from doing what he was going to.
Look at history, at every despotic regime and their use of “reasonable” and “common-sense” gun control laws and registration to eliminate gun ownership.
Look at hos dishonestly our legislators have represented the laws they put forth and how fraudulent the polls they espouse really are. Look at the exemptions they tend to put in to carve out themselves or their contributors.
Don’t try to BS your target audience as these manipulative people can be.

  • The content of such a speech would need to depend upon your audience.

If they are gun nuts, their cognitive dissonance (that’s a pro-firearms bias in this case),
will make it impossible for them to hear a word that you say in favor of gun control.

The human brain makes us *deaf* to information that contradicts any firm convictions
that we have. (Thus, if you already hate either Pres. Bush or Pres.Obama, you are
quite unable to hear anything positive that someone says about him.)

The same rule applies, if you are talking to thoughtful, sensible people. They’ll be
*deaf* to anything that you have to say that supports the right of an American
citizen to own a personal firearm, except under special circumstances.

There’s a term that’s used to describe a conversation between a gun nut and a
reasonable person. It’s “a dialogue of the deaf.”

This means that you must split your speech into two parts. Talk like a gun crazy for
half of the time, and a thoughtful person for the other half. In each case present four
    or five powerful sounding arguments.

Then invite your audience to take their choice.

(If you are in favor of gun control, be sure to give the gun-crazy arguments first, and the
sensible part of your speech last.)

  • I would quote statistics on shooting deaths and injuries in various countries like the UK, Japan and Australia, where there is gun control, versus the US. Then I would examine the second amendment in the context in which it was written, when they wanted people to own a musket in case they needed to form a militia, so men would be ready and armed to fight the British. That need has disappeared.
Then I would talk about masse murders that used assault weapons, and how Obama has been unable to pass any laws to limit their ownership or have background checks to save lives. This is because the republicans are given money by the NRA to vote against saving lives.
