Is it ok to change the name?

so my cat is about 5 months old and for a while i was told its a boy so i named him Simba but i discovered today after comparing to my other cat that he is actually a female….i dont want to keep calling her Simba but i dont wanna confuse my kitten either.

My question is can i change her name without confusing her and if so how would i do this?

  • First of all, take the cat to the vet and verify the sex for sure and neuter/spay by end of the month – should have been done months ago. If it it really a girl, maybe use Cindy for the name – that’s the closest I can think of to Simba.

  • You can change the name – I don’t think you will confuse her. You could also just keep the name. Simba is okay for a girl.

I can actually relate to this. I had a young male cat that I used the phrase “my boy” when I petted him without realizing I was not saying his name. Once I realized that he came to the name ‘myboy’ and not his name I had to concentrate on using his official name and stop the other. It didn’t take long for him to respond. Just keep calling her the new name and it she should be okay with it.

  • Yes you can change her name, just don’t do it too often or they start not responding at all. Consistency is important to cats. Just start calling her by her new name, use it all the time especially if it’s connected to pleasant things she likes. After hearing it a while, she’ll start responding to the new name. My cats were 5 years old when I adopted them and the names their former owner gave them were so…they didn’t exactly roll off the tongue and the cats didn’t seem to recognize them anyway so we started calling them more appropriate names that the cats did respond to.

  • Say the new name as you feed her. That makes cats love and respond to the name.

  • Just start using the new name and it won’t take long before she starts to understand. I wouldn’t change the name too often though.

  • naming a cat is not important. So there is no harm in changing her name

  • She’ll learn to ignore her new name in no time.

  • She is pretty young so it wouldn’t hurt. She will learn eventually:)
