Is my mountain bike still good for downhill mountain biking?

Hi, i been riding downhill mountain biking for 5 years, I used to have a cheap mountain bike from walmart and it was good, I throw it away because it was nothing but junk and it break down sometimes, spend a lot of time fixing it and waste of money. So I got another mountain bike, it a 1993 hardtail mountain bike with a front shocks suspension, got it from one of my old friend, it not a cheap mountain bike from walmart, it Gary Fisher Marlin, really good kind, I tune it up a bit, got new platform pedals, v brakes pads replace and better tires. I’m just a bit curious, will it hold even if I go jumping through the rough trail, steep slope and cliff drop? It really light weight and it kinda old, my friend telling me to get a better newer mountain bike but it cost around $25,0 or less. My question is, will my old hardtail mountain bike be good for downhill mountain biking or will it break it apart? Should I buy a better mountain bike? I used it for riding around town and mostly do tricks. I also ride my bike on trail but haven’t use it to go downhill yet.

Thanks

  • Drops? No. You need a really good, downhill specific, full squish bike to do the stuff you’re describing. Got a few thousand dollars?

Just for riding around town & on light off-road trails, keeping the tires in contact with the ground? Yes Great bike for that.

  • Down hill bikes are only designed for down hill they are too heavy for just riding around. The extra long shock travel is designed to absorb jumps, they also absorb pedaling energy.
