Is my water heater /gas heater about to explode?

The water heater I believe is the big cylinder in the garage. And lately (as in months now) it’s been making an extremely loud thumping sound after every toilet flush or when I jump in the shower? My buddy’s water heater exploded a week ago and it ripped out his garage . How often do you replace it? Thank you so much

  • Under normal water conditions, they last approx ~ years, and they’re normally replaced when the tank starts leaking.

If yours is making a strange noise, call a plumber and get it checked. They can explode under certain very unusual circumstances – like if the TPR is plugged and the gas valve gets stuck open.

  • It seems to be happening when you divert cold water pressure from its input. Can you watch it to see if it moves or shakes or anything when it thumps? Are you sure the thumping sound is coming from it and not from a pipe?

  • it is probably a faulty filler valve in the top of the heater.

Source(s): sounds terrible when they go wrong but cheap and easy to renew.
