we found a hurt pigeon in our front yard so we put him in a cage and he/she look hungry

Pigeons are scavengers. They will eat most anything. Try different options. If all else fails, try worms. Or call a professional.
Thirsty….is the first thing. Put a little bowl of water and pour a little bit of water into the bowl in front of him to see it. Other then that, they will need bird seeds.
He might be sick, re release him or call the animal humane peoples. Check yellow pages.
