  • People have this perception that sushi is a really healthy food, which it is, but people also for some reason have this idea that sushi is just rolls. So, they think sushi rolls are healthy. It really depends on the roll, but most of the rolls that Americans typically order are smothered in sauce and thus usually not healthy (unless it’s something light like ponzu sauce). So unless the rolls you’re getting are sauceless, they’re probably pretty fattening.

Nigiri is typically about 75 – 150 calories for one order. Three of those should fill you up.

One typical Americanized sushi roll (something like a Dragon roll) can be up to 8 calories… maybe even more.

As mentioned earlier, fish is extremely high in Omega 3s, but not all sushi contains fish. Sushi, by definition, is vinegar rice, usually topped with another ingredient, the most common ingredient being raw fish, but that doesn’t mean raw fish IS sushi. Raw fish alone is called sashimi. Also, fish doesn’t just contain omega 3 fats; it also has saturated fats, but the amount of saturated fish is quite a bit less.

California rolls are absolutely terrible but they definitely not the best for you; many of them have mayo… I barely consider them sushi. They are, technically, by definition, but it’s just… ugh. Try some nigiri, and you’ll see what I mean.

Also, if you’re going to eat sushi with fish, you shouldn’t eat a lot. Depending on the species, fish can have a lot of mercury. I don’t really worry about it because I think people are overly paranoid of it, but it is a concern of modern day society. Salmon is an example of a fish with low mercury content while fish like tuna, yellowtail, and swordfish are examples of fish with high in mercury content.

As for parasites from the raw fish you may be consuming, they usually aren’t an issue. However, to ensure you are getting the cleanest fish possible, I recommend going to sushi restaurants ONLY if they are Japanese-owned and operated. These restaurants generally have chefs who were born, raised, and trained to make sushi in Japan. They know the best way to handle the fish.

Oh, and uni is delicious. It is an acquired taste, but before you make your judgment based on what someone says, try it for yourself. You’d probably be very turned off by the color, but the taste to some is just… ugh, it makes me shiver it’s so good.

  • In general seafood is extremely good for you and low in fat as compared to say red meat. Seafood is high in Omega 3 which is extremely beneficial to our bodies in many ways especially the cardiovascular system. The dangers that come with sushi can come with other foods as well, and that is that you want to make sure that you are eating the freshest available. When sushi is eaten this usually involves soy sauce also. Soy sauce is high in sodium which can increase blood pressure, so moderation is key here, and many places offer low sodium soy sauce. Rice is involved in eating sushi, and that is a carbohydrate and carbs are usually high in calories. So again moderation is key. Sashimi does not have rice involved.

  • stay away from the rolls since they could be using many sauces you dont know about. any “nigiri” sushi, which is a piece of fish ontop of some rice is good , so is sashimi. It’s true that fish has fat but its the only fat that is actually good for you (omega-3). 6-8 pieces of any nigiri or sashimi will be fine.

p.s. stay away from the sea urchin “uni” sushi and the ones that have roe, and all the fancy named rolls. they are too fattening and just plain bad.
