Is this a suitable cage for rats?

i am looking in to getting 4 female baby rats, and have being searching for the perfect cage for months, and am stuck between the Hamberley and Little Friends Narrow bar hamster/rat cage. They are both large cages, but the Hamberley comes with a stand is nicer looking. My only concern (quite a big one) is that the base is nowhere near as deep as i need it to be, how can i fix this (rat friendly) but not ruin the look of the cage? or are there any cages and stands together for £70 or a cage on its own for £50, decent sized and shelves

  • Link would help, i googled them and a lot of different results came up for the ‘Little Friends Narrow bar hamster/rat cage’ so i’m not sure which you’re talking about.

The first one seems okay, remember that four rats need a lot of space so if it provides any less than at least 2 cubic feet of space per rat, then you need to look into bigger cages.

£50-70 is very cheap for a rat cage, I’d say a new cage alone suitable for four rats would cost at the very least £90-£120 and with a stand considerably more. You can look online for second hand cages, i’ve found a few suitable cages by doing this that only cost me £30-40! But it all depends on if there are any for sale near you.

A good cage site (which is where i got my liberta explorer) is this one: http://www.cagesworld.co.uk/c/Rat_Cages.htm

It has some of the cheapest prices i’ve ever seen for new cages.

About the suitability of the tray depth, you could have a custom tray made though they ussualy cost quite a bit, or you could use a litter tray in one corner of the cage to stop the substrate spilling and then use fleece, paper or keep the rest of the cage bare.

    Hope this helped

  • If you mean this Hamberley cage: http://www.littlepetwarehouse.co.uk/hamberley-sing…

It’s the better value, of better quality and larger size. However it will need some modification. For one, its wire flooring has to go (if removable), or covered by something solid. If you want a pan, you can easily construct one from panels of thin wood or possibly coroplast, snugly fit on the inside. You will also need tons more levels since it has none. If you can find metal or plastic tiers, with ladders, buy those, just be aware of the measurements to make sure they fit this cage.

That Little friends cage is a bit smaller and flimsier, yet more expensive. But it’s a great cage too, apart from the wooden ramps. Untreated wood will become urine soaked, is impossible to sterilize, and will get gnawed up over time. Metal or plastic is best, but you can always replace them if they are a problem.

  • No thats too small for one rat, let alone two……each rat should have a minimum of 2 square ft of room ADD: The cage on page 4 is much better suited to rats :), CAGE017, according to the cage calculator I use, that will happily house up to 8 rats 😀

  • do you have links?

there’s not many cages suitable for rats in those price brackets, and I don’t know those specific models.
