Jogging at 4mph… is that too slow?

I’m fairly out of shape. I’m 17.. I’m 5’2″ and 105lbs. I aim to jog everyday for at least a half an hour.. maybe 40 minutes. I’ll also be doing other exercises in addition to that but this is just the treadmill portion. I used to be able to do a half an hour jogging at 5mph but now I can only jog for a half an hour at 4mph. I’m small and my stride isn’t very big. I just started running again this week after being sick for a while. So jogging at 4mph… by 10 minutes I break into a sweat.. and by 30 minutes I can’t go any further. The rest of the day I’m sore but it’s a good sore. Is this okay to start out? Am I still getting a good amount of exercise? When I’m done I’m all red and have sweat dripping in my eyes. Should I just keep bumping it up until I can do 5mph for 30 or 40 minutes? How should I try to increase the speed? Each week?

But yeah. I FELT like I got a good workout from just jogging at 4mph for a half hour… but I’m just wondering if I actually did? Will it help me achieve my goals?

Update:

I can walk at that speed as well.. but when I start jogging, all the bouncing is a lot more activity and it’s more of a workout than walking is. So.. to get back into this.. without overdoing it.. should I stick with the 4mph for this week and then go up to 4.5 the next?

  • Sounds like a healthy Speed to me.

  • If it”s hurting it”s working. Continue doing this about 3 times a week for probably the next 4-6 weeks then look at some interval and fartlek type training and try building up to about 4-5 times a week your fitness will improve out of site and if your trying to lose weight you could probably were a sweat suit or even a jumper and track pants. REMBER to keep hydrated though.

    Hope this helps

  • It depends. To lose a pound, you have to burn 35 more calories than you consume. People typically break that down to eating about 5 less calories a day, or sometimes 10 at most, or else burning off an extra 5-10. The running you’re talking about for your weight burns about 4 calories. By adding exercise and eating a healthy amount of food, you should be able to take off those 45 pounds over the next year or so. Good luck 🙂

  • Ehh well this is my normal casual walking speed but you just got to work up to a higher level, good luck
