I work at a auto parts store in California and we are encouraged to install some of the parts that are sold… Such as car batteries, tail light/headlight bulbs, wiper blades etc… Generally the easy stuff. But I question the legality of this since we can’t use a OBD2 reader on a car now. From my understanding we have to have some sort of special license or special certification to even touch a customers cars… Anyone have any info on this?

No. That would be impossible to have every parts clerk or mechanic certified.

There are 9 different categories in which you can be certified, such as: brakes, auto AC, engine tune-up, engine overhaul, steering, auto electrical systems, transmissions, exhaust system, ? . Can’t think of the last one. To be a Master Mechanic, you have to have certification in all 9 categories.
Here’s the way that the advertising works: The repair shop may have 50 mechanics, but only one that is certified in one category. If the shop has one mechanic that is certified in one category, they can hang a sign out in front of their shop that says, “Certified Auto Mechanics.” That seems to me like it would be fraud, but that’s the way the law is. It doesn’t matter if the other mechanics are certified in anything or not. There is no law that says any mechanic has to be certified in anything.
