Military adoption benefits?

I was wondering if anyone had experience with military adoption and can help me out with the following questions:

How do you apply for the $2,0 the military gives you?

Is the 21 days of leave they give you chargeable or not?

How do you add a child to DEERS that has been placed in your home for adoption by an agency, but the adoption isn’t finalized yet?

Please only answer if you know the answer to at least one of my questions, and thank you to those of you who do!

Update:

How do you apply for the leave?

Update 2:

I know that children who their adoption is not yet finalized are covered, as it says on the DEERS website. I just don’t know how to add them; what documentation is needed.

  • To receive your $2,0 you will need to file a DD FORM 2675. It does take a little while to receive the money after you apply, so don’t expect it right away. Also, the adoption must be completed before applying and it must have cost you more than the $2,0 to complete the adoption.

When we applied for our leave, my husband routed his normal leave chit and noted the article that allowed it to be uncharged.

(Be certain that if you are adopting internationally that the service member has completed the appropriate training required for traveling into that country.)

  • I’ve personally never heard of a $2,0 credit the military gives you for adopting…

The 21 days of leave is not chargeable.

You can’t add anyone to deers that isn’t a dependent.

  • Go to your DEERS enrollment office on base and they can give you tell you what you need to do and give you the proper paperwork to fill out. You should be able to take care of it all there. Just tell them your situation. If you have some E-3 or something telling you it’s not possible, ask to speak to someone higher up. They usually don’t know what they’re talking about since they’ve had little experience in the military. Their supervisor should have more information on the subject.

  • Unfortunately, I can’t help much with the military info, however, I wanted to let you know that with regards to your question on DEERS and concerns for what paperwork is needed, that when a child is placed in your home for adoption, the agency will provide you with a letter that indicates you are the legal caregiver of this child and that they are to be treated as your adopted child. This allows you to have the child added to your medical insurance, etc. The adoption does not need to be finalized first. Our son was with us for about 18 months before we finalized the adoption, and we had no problems with getting him added to anything legally for us. Good luck to you!
