my cat likes these foods, are they safe to eat?

He was born 6 months ago, and its quite healthy, active and strong. Doesnt look like a small kitten anymore. I found him eating cookies (the soft kind), strawberry jam and chocolate muffins on different occasions. They’re usually food someone left out to eat later, or packaged and he manages to open it and eat it… He really likes it, I mean REALLY likes it. You could try stop him, and he stills persists. He seems to have a sweet tooth… and always tries to find a way to get the food he wants. E.G i left my cookies in a box with a lid, and he knocked it off my table so the cookies fell out, and he just… chewed it all up. He found a chocolate muffin, and after eating it, continues to lick the wrapper… IS IT BAD FOR HIM? Why does he like it?! I feed him cat biscuits and meat and plenty of water. Occasionally milk and cheeses.

  • Yes, chocolate is poison to a cat. He doesn’t need cookies or strawberry jam. Most cats are lactose intolerant and should not have cows milk or cheese.

Feed him a healthy cat food and he will not want the other stuff you are giving him.

  • Cats shouldn’t have that stuff. Cat treats are probably about the extent of what you should give it. I have a cat who will chew through plastic to get to food (despite the constantly-full dish of cat food available). He’s a pig. The best thing you can do is simply keep food locked up. Put it in a closed cabinet or something.

When you do give the cat food/treats, train it with good habits. Don’t feed it your food off your plate. Don’t feed it from the table, on the table, or on counters. Make food only available at his food dish. It won’t stop all his munching, but it might help.
