NEMA -R to L-R (generator plug)?

Would it be safe to power my house backfeeding from my L-R, /VAC generator outlet into my -R dryer/jaccuzzi outlet? I have been told, turn off main breaker to avoid sending power to the grid, but beyond that if I power off all breakers and then turn on only what I need (well pump, septic pump, gas HW heater and gas furnace, set of bedroom outlets for cable modem/router), wouldn’t I be OK until such time that I get power back and I can unplug the generator? Of course this is presuming I can find the necessary parts!

  • Well, it’s not safe. But I’m aware that these are extreme circumstances.

If you follow Scotty’s instructions to the letter, you can do it without killing either yourself, or the utility worker trying to restore your power. The sequence of steps is important! Don’t do them in a different order.

Make a written checklist, and follow it. Every time.

And, since you’ve already got the generator, have an electrician install a proper manual transfer switch for the next time.

  • This is exactly what i do. i have a A v receptacle in my pool pump shed at the bottom of the yard. When power goes off turn off main switch into house from street, plug in cord from genny, start generator & then switch on circuit breaker on generator.

Please be very carefull. I have had this set up for years, used it many times.

    Good luck.
