  • Colleges generally don’t have JV and Varsity squads. It’s not like high school. Most D1 schools require that their cheerleaders have the same skillset of a level 7 gymnast. Most college level cheerleaders, like most other college athletes are recruited. So if haven’t heard from Ole Miss already in regards to cheering for them, then it’s unlikely they will be interested in you. Very few high school cheerleaders cheer in college. Out of a typical high school squad only one, maybe two will go on to cheer in college. There’s always the possibility of being a walk-on, but the odds are definitely against you.

  • You should definately move up to Varsity. However, you have to do it the right way. First talk to your JV coach and make sure shes on board. Then at your next JV practice explain to your team that you were honored they chose you as a leader but you will be switching teams and you’d still be there for support for the new captain if she needed anything. This way they won’t resent you for leaving having heard it “through the grapevine” and it won’t seem like you’re doing anything sneaky. Next, you have to worry about the fact that the Varsity girls will resent you being moved onto their team for a number of reasons. 1. you’re very young to be on Varsity. 2. they might have been friends with the girl you are trying to “replace” 3. you weren’t part of the original team that was chosen. This does not make you any less a part of the team, but some girls might still see it this way. You just have to act mature and at your first practice with Varsity explain to them that you’re sorry Suzie moved and you’re not trying to replace her but you’re honored to be joining the team. Act mature if they don’t warm up to you right away- they’ll get over it pretty soon. Good luck!!
