Question about hooking up second computer monitor?

My tower is a dell optiplex 760 and my main monitor is a hyundai. Im trying to hook up a Planar PL2210MW to my computer also to run dual displays, but the second one wont work. Theyre both hooked up to my computer through a splitter in the normal monitor input jack. Also, the computer recognizes the second monitor and is set up as so. However, when I turn it on or wake the computer up, my desktop comes up, a message is displayed saying “d-sub” and under it “input” and then the screen goes black, even though the monitor is still on. Why is this happening? any advice?

  • I wasn’t aware you could simply split a video-out to provide multi-monitor support. If you can, and the second display is detected by your PC then are you sure you’ve enabled your OS (I’ll assume Windows) to use it? This is achieved by right clicking the desktop, and selecting “Display” (Win 7) or “Screen Resolution” (Win 8). If you see two separate displays here then simply select your desired usage from the drop-down menu; be it to duplicate your main display, or (more likely) extend your desktop onto that display.
