replaced cassette.. now chain won't stay in big cog?

I replaced the cassette (from 12-28 to 12-27) however now the chain won’t stay in the big cog in the back. I tried adjusting the low limit screw on the rear derailleur however it still won’t stay. When i press the shifter, the chain moves to the big cog but when i release the shift lever, the chain moves back. how do i fix this?

  • Does the new cassette have the same number of gears as the old one? If not, that’s your problem- your shifter doesn’t match your cassette.

If there was a spacer behind the original cassette there should also be one there now. Try to move a couple of cogs from side to side. If they are loose you are certainly missing a spacer.

Does your rear hub have an alloy or a steel freehub body? If steel and you have fitted a Dura Ace cassette, there is your problem. Believe it or not, Dura Ace cassettes are machined only to fit on alloy freehub bodies.

If you had no problems before this then the limit screws were NOT your problem. Limit screws are almost NEVER the problem.

When you ask these questions make sure to provide the brand and model of everything, the number of gears, and the problem. You missed 2 out of 3 essential pieces of information.

  • that cog may be worn out

if you use it a lot

otherwise you still didn;t get it adjuted right

    still sounds like limit screw

or could be cable tension slack [the other derailleur adjustment] – or indexing – which is just a fine tension adjustment

  • The tension OR check the width of your chain/ cogs (sprockets?), and the amount of teeth on the cogs (????). Sometimes, depending on the age and usage of your bike dust/ mud or simply rust builds up inside the cable carriers ( inserts), so take them out, clean them and lube them. Good luck sport!

  • You need more tension on the cable. Turn the barrel adjuster counter-clockwise. If you tightened the LOW screw, you may have to unscrew it a bit.

  • If the derailleur paralleogram pivots have been badly worn, the derailleur would have been misaligned, which will have led to skipping. additionally if the bolt that held it to the hanger became bent, comparable result. different than that, consistent with hazard the pulleys ought to have been badly worn that would result interior the chain shifting too a techniques factor to factor, that would reason skipping.

  • Try adjusting the cable tension. If that doesn’t work take it to the bike shop.
