Should a 4 yr old clean up their toys?

When I was little my mom hit me cause I didn’t clean up me and my brothers toys. She was capable of cleaning and my brother was 2 years older.

  • Yes, 4 year old children should clean THEIR toys up. My son has been cleaning his toys since he was 2 and he’s now 3. I even let him vacuum, of course only because he likes it, never forced… he actually enjoys cleaning beside me as I clean. I think it’s important to begin guiding and instilling good habits such as these at an early age, 4 is a great age to start!

Also, no hitting is needed to teach a child to clean up. I do put my son in timeout when he refuses and throws a fit.

  • Yes, a 4 yr old should clean up their toys. My son is 3 and I tell him to pick up his toys whenever he is not playing with them. He knows that he has to pick them up and sometimes I help him do it too. I believe that if he doesn’t start learning how to clean up after himself now, chances are low that he’ll bother cleaning up anything once he gets older. My son’s old day care encouraged children to clean up their toys too. My son was 2 1/2 at that time.

  • She shouldn’t have hit you, but yes, a 4 year old should clean up their own toys. My son is 19 months and cleans up his if I ask.

  • If my 1 1/2 year old could than yes a 4 year old can! I am my childs mom not her maid, but your brother needed to pick up his own toys!. Good habits can and should be taught early.

  • Yes, a 4 year should clean up their toys. Your mom is not your maid once you are capable to do it yourself.

  • Yes, my kids start cleaning up their toys with verbal guidance at around 18 months and clean up independently with no guidance besides “okay, clean up time” by the age of three. If you can make a mess, you can clean it up. But I dont hit my kids if they dont clean up, I simply put them in timeout and tell them they can come out when they are ready to behave and clean up, and I dont make them clean up their siblings messes, everyone is responsible for their own mess and if they are too young and cant do it, me and my husband clean up for them, thats not their siblings responsibility.

  • Your mother isn’t your personal maid, she already does so much for you when your that little, children need to learn responsibility and should be disciplined, your brother should’ve been made to help and I’m sure it was just a smack on the butt, if it was anything serious she would be in the wrong but I doubt it.

  • Yes, and so should 2 year olds and 3 year olds.

  • YES! My son is 2 and cleans up his. In fact he cleans up after himself all the time. Age is NOT a factor, physically ability is.

  • All kids should clean up their toys. If they can walk and take toys out, they can put them away. It’s called discipline and responsibility.
