Should I do soccer of cross country next year?

I’ve been playing soccer during the fall for several years now, but over the past couple of seasons, my coach has been ruining it. He’s a terrible coach and not a good motivator. Since I started track my freshman year of high school, I’ve had a lot of success. This includes at 10:15 for the two mile, and a 4:43 for the mile, and I’ve been improving at a pretty steady rate lately. I have been able to establish myself as a solid distance runner in the state and one of the best two miler’s in the state (4th in indoors for the state of Maine). Now, next year will be my senior year and I’m not sure what to do for a fall sport. I love the sport of soccer, but the coach makes the season stressful. I’ve never done XC but I’ve ran a few 5k’s before (17 minute range), so I’m not sure if this would be beneficial for indoor and outdoor track. I want to do whatever will benefit me more for track, but I also want to be successful and have a good season. I’ve been leaning toward XC, but I’m still not sure. What should I do?

PS. The championship meets are coming up soon, and my coach thinks that I can hit a sub 4:40 mile, and sub 10: two mile. Should this influence my decision?

  • You’re great at running it sounds like, so if you really have a problem with the coach then do XC it is a ton of fun! But if soccer is really important to you do that. I would recommend doing XC and then play soccer with your friends, or maybe there is another league where you live that has better coaches, just have fun and do what you like!
