Should I pay off my medical bills before I try to get a car?

I’m 24, and I pretty much have no credit. I recently got my credit report, and the only thing that I have on it is three medical bills, totaling around $12. So I was wondering, if I should try to pay these off before I look into buying a new car(well new to me, it’s a used 2013 with low miles). I was told that people usually overlook medical bills when they pull up your credit, but I’m not sure. And do you think that they would make me have a Cosigner?

  • It’s completely not true, that “they” overlook medical bills.

However, it’s a HORRIBLE idea to buy more car than you can afford. One thing you can bet on, will be that insurance costs you MORE than the car – so whatever the “monthly payment” is, double it – and that TOTAL needs to be less than 25% of your NET monthly income.

Needing a cosigner, is ANOTHER sign that you’re buying more car than you can afford. The biggest sign to me, is that you have a $12 debt hanging over your head. If you can’t pay off the $12 in a month or two, you do NOT have enough cashflow to borrow money for a car.

  • Pay your medical bills!

If you have no credit, those delinquent medical bills on your credit are not going to help you at all and are going to hurt you for the next 7 years. Seriously doubt if you will be able to get a car without paying an obscene interest rate WITH a cosigner!
