Sir Paul McCartney says we all need to be Vegetarian to help stop global warming, how can this help?

I don’t see how this will help stop global warming do you.

If we all go veggie, then we will not wear leather shoes, and in turn will have to have manmade shoes… hence more output of CO2.

Also not eating animals will not help. Probably too there will be even more palm oil made….which in turn will get rid of more rainforest.

The list is endless.

What are your views.

Update:

To the person who said I need to go get an education….The Rainforests are being torn down not mainly for cattle rearing, but for PALM OIL which is being made into CRUDE OIL…….. to enable the the Bio Fuels to be made……

Its all about… Money…These plantations generated 11.4 million metric tons of crude palm oil with an export value of US$4.43 billion and brought in $42.4 million (officially) to the Indonesian treasury

  • really, what we need to do is stop overpopulating the planet.

  • As a vegan I wanted to add that I applaud the permafarmer for their farming practices. However, not every vegetarian or vegan thinks that NO ONE should eat meat. Some of us feel that it’s something that we are in the position to do in a healthy way so we act accordingly. I wish that the farm factories were cleaned up and everyone conducted business like the permafarmer. The would would be a much better place, I think. However, since that is not the case I chose to act in a way that is right for me.

There is a spectrum of opinions even among vegetarians/vegans just like in other groups. To attack everyone across the board makes no sense. I don’t think I’ll ever understand why so many feel so threatened by my personal choices to not eat animal products. I’ve read studies that say only 1% of the U.S. is vegan. We’re not about to take over the world. The large corporations that engage in unethical and dirty farm practices have just a wee bit more power… don’t you think?

  • Oh he’s quite right. This was a bit of an education to me. I’ve known for years about the health implications of eating meat, but the environmental effects are new to me this year. Meat, particularly beef has a “carbon footprint” 10 times greater than an equal amount of nutrition of some other type. It was once though that the main carbon impact of your groceries was in the transportation and refrigeration, but this turns out to not always be the case. It also has a “water footprint” more than 10 times most vegetable food sources. Water footprints are something we’ll be hearing more about now as the world’s water sources dry up. A single kilogram of barley has a water footprint of 1,3 litres, while the industrial production of a kilogram of beef amasses a water footprint of 15,5 litres

  • You make a lot of unwarranted assumptions here. How do you know that non-leather shoes result in more CO2 than leather? Shoes with hemp or cotton uppers shouldn’t require any more CO2 producing processing.

I have no idea where the palm oil idea is coming from. What does palm oil made into biofuel have to do with not eating meat? Do vegans drown all their food in palm oil?

I am not eager to give up eating meat but will admit that it is incredibly wasteful. The caloric intake of cattle is much greater than what they supply. Plus, jokes aside, they do emit greenhouse gasses and other solid and liquid waste.

  • According to this article about the subject, a UN study concluded the meat industry generated more GH gases than transportation.

It also states McCartney made these statements in an interview with PETA. Big surprise. Everyone’s using this as an excuse to preach their pet message. Just wait until a study comes out proving fair skin causes global warming…because it’s ALL the Man’s fault! It’s the modern-day Salem witch hunt.

    mmmmm….beefy.

  • The reason why he said that is because plants or veggies has many energies. When a cow eats the plants, the cow only get 1% of the plant’s original energy, and when we eat the cows, we only get 1% of the cows energy, which make us only having 0.1% of the plant’s energy. so if we all are vegetarian, then we wouldn’t have to eat so many cows or chickens or porks and so on. Because eating plants gives so more energy, you don’t need to eat a lot, so it wouldn’t really make global warming worst.

  • its cos in the amazon they tear down acres of trees to make room for ranches to farm meat-cows etc.

and by reducing the meat we eat there will be less demand for these ranches to be created and less of the amazon will be torn down.

with the amazon being destroyed equals less and less trees means more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as the trees are needed to breathe in the CO2 we breathe out…

    Hope this helps 😀

  • Just another example of some nut job using global warming, or more precisely the hysteria that has been drummed up around global warming, to advance their own social/political agenda.

  • 1. Methane from excrement (Over 20X’s more powerful than CO2) “A single dairy cow produces approximately 120 pounds of wet manure per day. Estimates equate the waste produced per day by one dairy cow to that of 20-40 humans per day”.

    2. Shipping (Our average food is shipped over 16 miles and its pretty hard to crow a cow in your back yard, albeit a privileged few might have a farm big enough to support some cows).

    3. Refrigeration: Unlike most vegetarian options meat needs to be refrigerated to prevent spoiling expending yet more energy.

    4. Expends 18% of all green house gases (more than transportation

    5. Massive Dead Zones: created from waste runoffs

    6. Deforestation: 70% of all previously deforested Amazon is now pasture for animal husbandry and a large portion of the rest is crops grown to feed these animals.

    7. Sheer Number of Animals killed for human consumption = 48 billion (21 stats). There are vastly more animals raised and killed for human consumption than there are people on this earth. Each one of them is taking out 02 an putting back CO2

    8. Vastly inefficient: Takes 16 pounds of grain just to get one pound of beef. If even a significant portion of people ate vegan we could feed the whole entire world without major problems. Also a good portion of the land being used to feed animals could be converted back into forests and more effective CO2 filters.

    9. Water Usage: “Besides grains, animals need water to survive and grow until they are slaughtered. One pound of beef requires an input of approximately 25 gallons of water, whereas a pound of soy requires 250 gallons of water and a pound of wheat only 25 gallons. Meat production is inefficient as it requires the consumption of an extensive amount of resources over many months and years before becoming a usable food product. With the water used to produce a single hamburger, you could take a luxurious shower every day for two and a half weeks.”

  • it was a real eye opener for me when i found out the costs of meat production.

i have given up eating beef since i calculated i could drive to the nearest town and back, and heat my caravan for 2 evenings on electricity, and only produce as much emissions as from one portion of supermarket beef.

now i need to work it out for cheese….

  • Put simply, a recent UN study concluded that the raising of animals for food produced more greenhouse gases than all forms of transportation COMBINED.
