Sound not working on XP?

I reinstalled Windows XP because cousin put a virus. So I reinstalled, but I can’t figure out how to get my sound to work. The small sound icon that would appear in the task bar is not there.

Any idea what could be the problem?

  • Well first of all Is your speakers plugged in to the lime green port in the back of your computer? if so go to start->control panel->administrative tools->computer management->device manager-> if you see anything with a yellow caution sign that means that you need the drivers for them. You can do this by clicking on it and selecting the driver tab and click “update driver” (you can only do this if you are connected to the internet or if you have the driver on your computer.

Another test is to go to control panel-> sound-> does “speakers” have a check by it? if so then go to the sound tab->click on one of the sounds in the menu (one click) then click test and if you hear the noise then your speakers are fine and you can get your sound icon back in the system tray by doing the following: right-click on the task-bar-> properties->in the task-bar tab click customize-> then click “turn system icons on or off”-> then turn the volume on. Hope this helped

  • You’ll probably need to re-install your sound card
