Use of LPG as the new fuel for the automobile?

I can see india has the best infrastructure thus far and germany has a number of investments accordingly. While I drove a taxi in LA in 1977 powered with LPG and gas at the same time wtf isnt it crazy we cannot see even an availability of conversion kits in the US. An indian kit is $5 a US version if you can find it is obfuscated with bull#$% and costs around 25. I mean.. I mean,, wtf!

  • As you pointed out- LPG is not a new fuel, it is an alternative fuel.
Blame it on Henry Ford! When doing research for an economical car to own he sent out research vehicles that used different fuels. It needs to be remembered that back when Daimler and Benz started building infernal combustion engines that the only place to get petrol was at the local pharmacy. The gasoline engined cars had the least problem finding fuel.
Maybe if he had been more worried about our decency on oil- he would have started a trend for vehicles that would be more flexible in what fuel they used.
I also looked into alternate fuel conversion kits a few years back and was disappointed. Back in the 70’s a conversion kit cost on the order of less then 1 dollars! But now as you say- the price is out of site. There are also other “safety regulations” that make the conversion impractical and have not kept pace with state of the art abilities.
  • Here in Italy 1.5 sold car on 10 run on LPG or CNG.
My family owned only LPG-owned cars since 1982.
The reason is that, gasoline and diesel here cost between 9 and 10 $ per gallon, so they are almost unaffordable. On the countrary, LPG is available at 4.5-5$ per gallon, so much cheaper.
This difference is due to high taxation on gasoline and diesel (5.5$ / gallon of taxes), and lower taxation on LPG (0.9$ / per gallon).
I don’t think USA will never use LPG as alternative fuel, due to recent adbundance of natural gas (CNG) from shale fracking. Perhaps you’ll have no more clean water to drink, but you’ll have tons of CNG to burn.
Anyway, so far american cars had great problems of fuel efficiency because they (..you…) used ricolously old technologies, and your gasoline sucks (our standard gasoline is 95-octane and premium one 105-octane, I see you’re on much lower values…).
Anyway, conversion to LPG of a 4-cyclinder car here costs about 15euro (20$) [see http://preventivo.landi.it/preventivo.ve… GoogleTranslator will help you]
