Very practical and effective striking martial art?

I’m 14 and I’ve been in and out of a few MA schools. I did muay thai for 8 months I did like it, but they focused to much on competition and I’m not a “fighter”. I was thinking about taking up wing chun and I have done research. Alot people rant on it for not being effective and practical. I want to take a martial art where they utilize the vertical fist alot. I know the horizontal has more power but lacks speed in a way. All the dojos are fake around me and trust me I checked them out in the northern virginia area. Any recommendations??

  • Sounds like you want something more self-defense oriented. Try looking into Krav Maga. It’s a self-defense system created in Israel and used by the Israeli Armed Forces. It has some basics of Wing Chun and a mix of many other styles. It teaches and improves gross motor skills, teaching what feels natural is the best.

You also need to look at what is in your area too. I’ve had it happen many times that i’ve found a style I like, and there’s nothing within a reasonable distance.

  • You know what? There actually isn’t any that many martial arts if you think about it, I mean all martial arts are linked with each other, I don’t like mma much but most mma fighters have a background style of, muaythai? Wrestling? BJJ? Boxing? Kickboxing? Taekwondo? And these kind of styles… Muay thai has the same boxing and it has kickboxing kicks, (maybe more powerfull as shins and etc) but anyways, it also has clinching, elbows and knees, , wrestling is grappling like bjj but bjj has locks and brakes… Taekwondo is mostly kicking, most of these kicks are in muaythai and kickboxing (but roundhouse is favourite)… I also don’t like the fact that my muaythai gym gets me ready for a ring fight, I don’t want no bs ring fight! I wanna street fight and defend! Kravmaga, is very affective.. For streets… For ring fight lol its useless, because it is not for a ring fight… It has vital points… Deadly strikes etc… For streets… Also kungfu; they try make the technuiqes look so clean but, it never is? Wingchun is an example, wingchun is BS! Some styles of kungfu are good but the rest??

If it was alive today muay boran would be good… KFM, a new martial art, but growing rapidly, it is close range (elbow range) and it is not bad… I wouldn’t use it fully but I would get the technuiqe how you cover your face and stuff… Go to different martial arts, and then put it together, uve done muay thai? Go to some taekwondo, boxing, a few wingchun blocks and combine them, also grappling and stuff so bjj, and judo for throws…

I cannot give you a proper martial art unfortunately, and I do not recommend mma, its not ‘mixed’ overall 😀

  • Ok, let me simplify things a bit. your description and age tell me that you have your head messed up with the crap others are posting. The majority of people answering in this section know littel or nothing about what they post. People ranting about Wing Chun today will rant about some other arts tomorrow. They have no realistic basis for their comments. Bottom line is martial arts is about life protection arts..

Stop listening to people bash arts they neither know or understand. The teenagers here could not possibly have enough of a realistic background to be advising people what works and what does not.

All arts are only as good as how and what is taught. Many schools (regardless of style) are simply not teaching the art they claim to teach. but there are a few good schools out there. If you want to study Wing Chun and the school near you is teaching it as it should be taught, then go to it. If you let what others are telling you decide what you do, you will never do anything. someone will bash any style you pick. Ignore them…

  • There should be no difference in speed between a punch thrown with a vertical or horizontal fist. Look into some Full Contact Karate schools if Muay Thai didn’t do it for you. Also look into a few regular Boxing gyms, or for a Muay Thai school that’s more traditional (although these are harder to find, you pretty much need a Kru from Thailand for this).

  • you can keep a fist vertical until you’re right before the target and then turn it horizontal. Boxing maybe? I know they’re not striking martial arts but wrestling and jiu-jitsu are very good martial arts to learn.

  • Western Boxing or Krav Maga may be your thing,

If you are not keen on competition, the Russian Systema may be for you – no belts, no gradings just training.

  • ITF Tae Kwon Do and Karate are less competition-based and teach good strikes and kicks too.

  • Wing Chun is absolutely useless, I’m being honest…So many times I’ve seen Wing chun “experts” dominated by novice boxers/wrestlers…if you want to be a good striker, Boxing, Kickboxing, or Muay Thai is the way to go.
