  • Musical theater correctly called “theater dance”, is dance you would find on Broadway. Given that there is a lot of diversity in today’s Broadway with everything from tap to ballet, it generally refers to Fosse type dance which is kind of like jazz but more “showy.”

Jazz ballet is another made up name some studio has come up with. Honestly, it sounds like lyrical dance which is based off of ballet technique with a little bit of jazz thrown into the mix. The reality is, you would have to see the class to see what they mean as this can vary from studio to studio. With names like those, they could even be interchangeable based on what the studio decides to call them.

You wont find jazz ballet listed as a genre in professional dance.
