  • Hello Prem Singh Negi,

In our world of medicine, we often forget how common death is. That not everything born, will naturally survive. This is very prevalent in the world of agriculture, and is something we farmers come to accept. However, one must keep in mind how many chicks have died. Disease is a threat, and it is even greater a risk for a larger poultry keeper.

Out of 3,5 chicks, loosing 50-1 chicks is actually very good odds! And your friend will continue to loose more birds as they age. Since these are meat fowl, he will loose quite a few birds due to weak legs that can not support their body weight.

If his birds are dropping quickly, and a large number is appearing sick then he has an illness. This is likely to be a disease, or parasite. The most common disease is Mareks, and the most common parasite is Coccidiosis. If he didn’t vaccinate for these problems, he should do so with the next batch of chicks. As a large poultry keeper a disease posses a great risk to him, and he is actually at a greater risk as he has a larger number of birds soiling an area.

He is dealing with meat birds, which usually get slaughtered around 6 weeks. These birds are to young (besides meat birds can’t handle stress) to be anywhere, besides a controlled environment. They can’t be in the wind or rain. Extreme heat will also kill them, so fans are important for air quality as well as keeping the temperature down.

    Best wishes,
