What do I need to do in order to safely change operating systems?

I currently have Windows Vista but I’d like to get Windows 7. My windows Vista came with my laptop when I bought it new but I didn’t get a CD. Do I need the CD for changing operating systems?

What should I backup? Anything else I need to know?

  • All you need is a Windows 7 upgrade disc to safely migrate to the new Operating System. A backup is always recommended, but not necessary as Windows does not erase your documents/files during Installation unless you explicitly choose to format your hard drive.

    If you bought your computer after June of last year, you may be entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 7 in which case you should contact your PC’s manufacturer for more details.
