What does it mean if there is a combination lock box on a house for sale?

I seen a house that was empty with a sign out in front that had a realtors name and number on it. There was a combination lock box hanging on the door and I am trying to figure out if it is a bank owned/foreclosed house. I have heard that when you see a combination lock box on the house that means it is foreclosed. However, I didn’t see any signs on the house that said anything like most of the foreclosed homes do.

Any answers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • it doesnt necessarily mean its foreclosed, many realtors use the lock boxes so different agents can get in. if it is foreclosed, usually a company such as safeguard will maintain the property, and there will be a small sticker on the door with their # on it. you could try the hud.gov website and look up your state & county and see if anything comes up under foreclosures, or go to your county courthouse and ask the assessor or treasurer what the status of the property is.all you need is the address, its all public information, and is free for the asking.

  • It does not mean it is a foreclosure.

Realtors often use these boxes to allow other realtors to get into the house and show the property. That way they get more people in to see the house and they spit the realtor fees with the other realtor.

  • There is a group called Multiple Listing Service and members hang a lock box containing the house key on the door knob so other members can get in.

  • Simply, the house for sale. Period. Who cares why?

  • could somebody have taken the sign ? ( THINK about it ) .
