What does this mean about commodity fetishism?

Hi I am doing some revision for my sociology exam about Marxism. Could someone please explain simply what the following means? Thanks!!

The family also ends up as an institution which exerts social control on parents; in capitalist society which is highly consumerist they have little choice but to work hard in order to buy an ever-increasing variety of unnecessary commodities for their family. The family is thus an integral part of what Marxists call ‘commodity fetishism’; it helps to fuel the creation of false needs, which in order to be satisfied, require people to work hard.

You seem intelligent enough to understand wikipedia.

PS as an additional exercise, look around your house and think which things existed during Marx time. For things that did not exist, would you consider them “unnecessary” and “fetishist”, since people got along just fine without them?
