I’m writing an essay and the sentence goes like this:
This theme is that human nature is characterized by the need or_____ for social acceptance.
The blank is where the word that means the opposite of need goes.
Thanks guys

Maybe Aunty rhymes ‘independance sounds better!
Well, if you need something…the opposite would be that you already have it.
It doesn’t fit with your sentence though. Maybe….absence of, want…
I want to say have
How about rephrasing it as “Human nature is characterised by the reliance on social acceptence, or the independence from society”.
Or you could use the phrase “degree of need for social acceptance”.
I’d use want for the blank
want, desire
It’s like that Rolling Stone song:
“You can’t always get what you want, but if you find sometimes you might find you get what you need”.
Need is something that’s essential, want is something you can live without, it’s less fulfilling more material than spiritual or physical.
Is it have?
