the sinking of the Indianapolis is alluded to by Captain Quint in the famous drinking scene in the movie “Jaws.”
There were other sinkings in WWII with large shark attacks, including the sinking of troop ship near Long island NY. But, the story of the Indianapolis is the best known.
The Discovery Channel has stated that the USS Indianapolis sinking resulted in the most shark attacks on humans in history, and attributes the attacks to the oceanic whitetip shark species.
