  • Start out by saying how honored you feel to be asked to speak on your best friend’s behalf. Pick your all time favorite things you remember about your friend. Things she’s said or done that impress you about her character. Things you admire her for. Funny and memorable times you two have shared. Focusing on her to start will open the door for you to include everyone else that is listening to you.

This should be very easy for you to write…It will be straight from your heart.

  • Dear Aspi Pie, Are you musical? Will anyone in the audience be? Come to think of it, that’s tough to gage in an audience, huh? 🙂 Maybe talk about making the world better, using your talents and abilities for the betterment of society and not for personal gain? Maybe comparing it to being a superhero? Batman had no superpowers, but had a keen intellect, powers of reasoning and deduction, and cool gadgets. He proved that you don’t need powers to be a hero. It’s not about who’s the fastest or strongest, it’s about putting yourself in the line of fire to protect and help the innocent and helpless. The reason I ask about music is maybe you could compare the school year to a fine symphony? Both present new ideas. In the middle of the year, those ideas are presented in variations and lengthened. The final part of a composition is called a coda. Maybe the end of the year is like the coda? Maybe talk about being the first to step forward to do the right thing, even though that’s hard sometimes?

If you want to pursue that, I could relate to you the story of Marian Anderson. She was a singer who was not welcome into certain places (I think she lived around the turn of the century) because she was black. She was not allowed to sing in in an auditorium. Some people were mad so they arranged an outdoor concert for her. She was not permitted to enter certain hotels, restaurants, schools, etc strictly because of her race. When asked how she felt about it all, she said, “If you are ever afraid to do the right thing, go ahead and do it anyway. You will meet others who feel as you do and they will join you.”

Need a few good quotes for your speech? Here a few for your consideration:

“Be willing to become the change that you seek.” Mahatma Ghandi (saw this on a T shirt at work just today!)

“The important thing is this – to be able at any moment to exchange what we are for what we could become.” Charles Dubois

“A successful man is one who builds a firm foundation out of the bricks that others have thrown at him.” David Brinkley

    Good luck! Hope this helps.
