What's wrong with my connection?

I bought a new laptop(hp 20 or w.e) a couple days ago. Initially everything ran smoothly, but by day two and onward my connection online has spiraled down hill entirely. There’s two other both slightly and majorly older laptops in the house that connect perfectly to the wireless signal. My new laptop however has been really slow. At first it was just streaming videos that was really slow, but now it’s loading sites slowly as well. I’ve tried connecting to the modem directly, and it connects, but says no network/internet for some reason. Then I wired to the router directly, got a connection but it wasn’t much better. This was last night, but now it’s slow like crazy. Example being that the whole time I’ve been typing this, yahoo answers tab has had the loading blue circle spinning on it. The connection seems to get slower at night time, which leads me to believe it’s a problem with either the modem or router as opposed to my laptop itself. But it being only my laptop that’s having the problem kind of contradicts that. Connecting by wire sort of rules out the possibility of it being a weak wireless card in my laptop?

I’m really stumped, any ideas?

  • WIRED Goto a site and check the internet speed on your laptop. WIRED Then do the same thing on an older laptop in the same area. Are they both the same speed and slow? Get better internet. Are they both the same speed and your laptop is still slower than the dinosaur? Your comp is crap. Hope you have a warranty.

  • A few things. When you set up your router it usually gets setup to run a ” mixed” network meaning N,G, and 802.11b . Whatever computer that uses B slows your whole network to B. even when your new laptop is N.

shutdown the old ones and run a test to see if that has any effect. Restart the modem router and the new laptop. (Old ones shutdown)

At that point you can cross a few things off the list.

Also- if it’s an old laptop it’s a safe bet you have a ton of junk running junk in the background. Also check your speed while wired. If everything slow down when your neighbor watches Netflix then your barking up the wrong tree.

  • Check that it is not updating windows, or your anti virus. You can also check if your anti virus is doing a system scan as this can slow the computer down as well.

  • there may be problem with your driver.. i recommend updating your driver or installing a new one
