Why aren’t I allowed on school bus with crutches?

I sprained my ankle and now got crutches. When i came to normally take the bus, the bus driver told me that he wasn’t going to let me get on the bus(and he was rather rude about it!) i looked it up on google and some people said their buses allow it, and some people dont. Some people say that its because the busdrivers doesnt want you to fall while going up the stairs, but i clearly said i can perfecly climb up the stairs even without my crutches. i can walk up the stairs normaly now as long as there is not more than 5 stairs, the only reason i have crutches is because i cant walk for too long without pain, and if i do walk, i walk slowly, weirdly, making sure my ankle doesnt bend. So i can get in and out the bus without problem, So why the heck wont the rude busdriver let me in? My bus company is Sharp, does anyone know if Sharp actually let people with crutches get on? if not, well that is just dumb. ps: if it helps, i am in Ontario, Canada

  • Because if you did have an accident you would no doubt sue the driver, the bus company, the makers of the crutches etc, etc. The bus driver is pre empting you and not taking the chance on financial ruin.
  • Obviously because of the likelihood that you’ll trip on the way in or out, fall and break some bones, resulting in a lawsuit against the bus co.

It’s THEIR bus, and your tough luck.

It’s amazing to me that this has to be explained to you. It ought to be common sense.

  • I would talk to your schools supervisor or principal as this is unheard of. You have a disability or a injury its your right to get on a public school bus with whatever devise needed to aid you. This is called discrimination on his part. Usually the bus driver would make u sit in the very front seat this way you can get on and off much easier also you’re not a trip hazard.

  • Riding a school bus is not a right. It’s a privilege, and that privilege can be revoked or suspended. If the driver feels a passenger is a safety hazard, then the driver has the right to suspend the privilege of that passenger.
