Why do you ALWAYS get less space on a HDD than the box it comes in says it has?

The box says the HDD has a TB capacity but when you plug it in and right-click on it in My Computer it says you only have GB. I DO NOT believe GB is used for administrative data!

  • It is a recognised and accepted standard that the Hard Drive manufacturers use the “rough” denominator of Gb equals Tb, where it should a . But they also measure the Gigabytes as Mb and also the megabytes not as that Windows does so you loose another chunk as well and this is where your missing space has gone, it was never there in the first place.

Take divide by (Mb), multiply by , divide by (Gb), multiply by and divide again by (Tb) and you will get your . Gb that Windows finds
