Why do you cheer heels? + BQ?

Can someone manage to explain to me WHY exactly they cheer heels? I really don’t see a reason for it. I thought wrestling was supposed to be about suspending your disbelief. You don’t cheer the bad guys in real life!

When a troll asks “Why do you watch wrestling?” I see many people respond “Why do you watch movies?” So if wrestling is basically a movie with the actors doing their own stunts, then why doesn’t everyone cheer the good guys and boo the bad guys? When I’m watching a movie, I really get into it and I start loathing the villain. I want nothing more than to be a part of the movie so I could get my hands on him myself. But since I can’t do that, I cheer on the hero, willing him on to catch the bad guy and defeat him.

But it seems in wrestling, it’s the opposite. I see people cheering the bad guys and booing the good guys. (Many times, I see people cheering heels for no other reason than that they’re a heel!) If you do this, (and it seems most of the people here do) can you explain exactly WHY you do?

Argue with me, disagree, go ahead! At least try to defend and back up your argument instead of just calling me an idiot or just saying I’m wrong.

BQ: What’s the difference between a No Holds Barred Match and a No Disqualification Match?

Star if you like!

Update:

A lot of answers are saying that they cheer the heel because of their talent. But in a movie, the talent of the actor who plays the villain just makes you “hate” him even more! When you have someone that can play the villain extremely well, you still don’t cheer him! You get pissed off and pray that at the end of the movie he gets caught. So why doesn’t this apply to talented heel wrestlers?

  • This is a new generation and a lot has changed since the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. You brought up two interesting points of suspending our disbelief and the comparison to movies. I’ll use examples of the “new generation” taking play. For instance, I’ll use “The Dark Knight” as the primary example. We have Heath Ledger playing as The Joker, a unique, dark and sadistic type of character. As much as he killed others or did his usual M.O. of setting traps of some shape and form, the people still embraced the character. I’m ruling out Heath Ledger’s death into having a huge affect on that because whoever played the role as The Joker would of still been praised for being “cool”, “awesome” and rebel-like who had no rules to follow. Then you have someone in the form of Batman who is about justice, honor and being the superhero. You still got people who praise Batman, while others rather follow the rebel-like character who has no rules because they’re more related. It’s somewhat the same way how everyone loved Stone Cold because he was the anti-authority figure who always abused the hell out of his boss (which everyone would LOVE to do to their boss). I know Austin was a face and Joker was the villain, but it still relates because of the character.

It’s part of the newer generation and how life changes or evolves. It’s like any other trend, fad or movement. In this day of era, we still have those who suspend their disbelief, while most fans are treating this like it’s a “real” sport. It’s part of being the passionate fan and choosing who you cheer or boo now. When we look at football, basketball, mixed martial arts and etc., fans have the right to choose who they cheer or boo. It’s about the freedom to choose and not feel controlled. Years ago in Pro Wrestling, it seemed like everyone would cheer the face and boo the heel. It was like a controlled system where fans had to do what the higher-ups told them to do or shoved down their throats. Now it’s like the fans are sick of being fed and want to do what they want.

Hulk Hogan was looked at as a Superhero everywhere and I don’t ever recall him getting booed until his heel turn in WCW. He was presented as the Pro-American built man who was about “justice” and doing things “right”, defeating all the heels (or super villains) during his time. Most fans cheered him and believed in him because that’s how it was presented to the fans. I believe back then that MOST fans were always for the hero because they were taught “right from wrong” and to them, that was “right” in their books. It’s the same like any other movie back then such as Superman 4 (1987), for an example. Mostly everyone loved Superman because he was unreal and always doing what was right. Lex Luther being an evil like genius was mostly hated because of who he was. He was the opposite of Superman. The same goes for Nuclear Man. You fast-forward around our modern day and the people are more different. You’ll see those who praise Lex Luther for being an evil genius and his ideals and persona, while others enjoy Superman for being who he was. Others will love Nuclear Man now because of his character and traits.

With all that being said, it’s split between those who are tired of being “controlled” on who to cheer. While others are much younger and can’t or don’t know how to suspend their disbelief. It’s also because some will follow others and find that it’s okay to cheer for whoever, so now there’s no more “right or wrong”, it’s just up to the fans. Now with exposure to other promotions, some will judge strictly on skills. It’s about which wrestler is your “cup of tea”. The modern day Hero vs. Villain is always going to be split now because of the characters and which character is your taste. That’s my opinion and my perspective could be argued or debated with, but that’s just my view on this.

BQ: They’re basically the same thing. But if I had to break it down a bit, I would say that in a No Holds Barred, you’ll see more use in some type of weapons. While in a No Disqualification, I’ll see a basic match, but more outside of the ring (and probably outside interference). That’s the only difference I really see, but that’s probably just me.

  • A heel getting cheered is by people who have stayed true to the superstar regardless of who he is as a face or heel. A lot of people like heels because they want to be unique or different from people who always cheer faces and some people like them because they don’t want happy endings they want this bad*** guy to ruin everything. Some people possibly follow the band wagon hearing other people praise the heel others soon take notice and start agreeing. I think it’s more like a appreciation for their work for doing some crazy evil things and still staying strong even though the fans are against you. Heels are also more fun and do some real cheating. BQ: He was supposed to get a push until they found out about his drug use. So now i think he’ll just be a jobber to other superstars and since Ezekiel Jackson isn’t there he’ll just lose to other superstars. Sucks because i think he’s pretty talented. He might get in the future endeavors list and get released.

  • Look D4L you made a good argument with the “movies comparision” and I’ll try to help.

The thing is that people find the “bad guys” more interesting. For example in the movie The Dark Knight,Joker was potrayed as a dark and bloodied-loving person.People are fascinated in misteries and there was a mistery in how Joker really became…Joker.Letting the Joker from TDK alone, probably some fans don’t know about him,but Cesar Romero’s Joker was nothing like Heath Ledger’s.Cesar Romero’s Joker was a very spiritual, comic, laughable Joker. He was more like how Santino is today, more like a joke. That made him loved by the fans. Also the fact that he does anything possible to make us hate him, well to hate his on-screen character, makes him put a lot of effort and makes us love him.

We can’t avoid the fact that movie characters apply in wrestling indirectly.A very good example is Hulk Hogan. Now I don’t want to sound smartass-ish but it is a perfect example.Hogan can be compared to Superman with a lot of things.Superman was an invincible immortal human with a weak point:kryptonite.Hogan was an unbeatable wrestler with his kryptonite being not being able to have backstage power.

But the fact is that you aren’t supposed to love him.If in real life a mentally disorded freak kills your parents you aren’t supposed to love him,but to hate him with all you got.Younger generations and new people like heels because they thing that’s the “cool” thing now but it’s not.Concluding with that,it should be added that they cheer heels because they can’t grow a brain of theirselves to help.

  • Somewhere in the 90s, it became cool and even the popular thing to do, cheering the heels, and it hasn’t died since and probably never will. The fact is, most babyfaces aren’t over like they used to be. You have to be a REALLY strong babyface these days to get the crowd to buy into you and have the majority if not all of them cheer for you. It’s so much easier to be a heel in the age of the internet and the smart marks. People naturally want to root for the bad guy. It’s why Hannibal Lector is so popular. He was an evil man, but you liked him because he was so sneaky and was always at the right place at the right time. The days of the pure babyface getting cheered and the pure heel getting a tremendous amount of heel heat are over, unless you’re one of the old school guys like HHH, HBK, or Taker, or in TNA, Angle and Hogan, because they have psychology mastered to the point they know how to work a crowd. Hogan did very little, but he got the crowd into his matches. The younger guys today just do spotfests with no psychology in their matches

  • i can only speak for my self so that what imma do.

I just like what i like i don’t care if they are considered bad or considered good . When i watch movies there are lots of times i am rooting for the bad guy simply because they catch and can keep my interest. same when it comes to wrestling , i like some face superstars but there are a lot of times when the heels are most interesting to me .

BQ- there is no real difference other then No Barred Matches do tend to be a bit more aggressive

  • No holds barred match and no disqualification matches are the same. THey just have different names for them so they “seem” like different matches

    As for cheering heels

There are many kinds of heels, such as egotistical heel and monster heel, but the ones who get cheered are caled fan favourite heels

I myself only cheer the ones i like, like Edge and Randy Orton, but also like face wrestlers like Triple H and Shawn Michaels, however there are a lot of faces that i cant stand, like the Undertaker and John Cena

Heels find themselves cheered because the faces try to hard to get cheers, while the heels only want to get a reaction from the crowd, whether its heel heat or a face pop. John Cena, for example trys to hard to be a babyface, which is why he attracts many younger fans. Heel wrestlers such as Edge play a very convincing heel role, and doesn’t care about being a face, thus being the reason why he is also a “fan-favourite heel”

  • *Clears throat.. where is my gift Mr.Clause?* 😉 lol..

The reason I cheer heels is because their characters tend to trigger an interest for me. As a lot of people know I’d probably be the least likely to be “heel like” .. not trying to sound modest but it isn’t who I am lol.. but I think because I am so different from the character of the heel is why I am so drawn into their characters rather than the classic good guy. I usually have a variety of favourites I don’t mind faces, I am not the type who strictly only likes the heels. I do like faces too.

I am drawn to the heel character a lot though. I really think it is because it is so different from what I am and I think that is kind of cool. I have always been interested in the diverse evil characters, not only in professional wrestling with the heels, but also in movies with the bad guys. I find the bad guys in movies entertaining to watch I enjoying hating them which usually brings me to the point where I end up enjoying their role more than the actually find their role more interesting and fun to watch.

I also read a lot. I do read a lot of books where the main character is very dark and a bit crazy. I find those books much more interesting and more to my liking.. everything doesn’t have to end in a happily ever after. Just like in real life.. life doesn’t always end on good guy morals. I know I do try to be a very nice person. I am pretty quiet and I don’t usually speak out badly about someone. I find that taking a fascination in such diverse dark or even evil characters are well just more fun to watch, read about or just listen too. I find the heel characters usually have the easier role if they can play it off well.. it is much easier to get heat opposed to love, compassion and respect.

I love to watch the heels because I love their arrogance. I love to see their logic’s to why they are right and everyone else is just wrong. I think it is cool how they can make a whole career off lies and just b.s.. I find that very cool. I think the heels are much more interesting to watch.. not only do I think that it isn’t fair to hate talent. I try to pick favourites based on talent rather than who is a good guy and who is a bad guy. I think the heels are funny really.. I love how they can get hate for speaking the truth. It isn’t always fun to listen to the good side. Sometimes it is interesting to go against the rules.

Breaking rules and exploring my opinions as a free mind amuses me. I don’t like to do what people tell me I should. I like watching the heels in everything really because they are so different than I. And I find it amusing to see personally if I could pull off being bad as well too lol.. I think it would be kind of amusing to be the bad guy like the heels in wrestling or the bad guys in movies, evil characters on tv or dark characters in books.

  • I agree. I have said it before, there is no better way to show respect and admiration for your favorite heels than by booing them, and showing them they are doing a good job. But think about it. What do the “cool” fans of today hate. Kids and Cena. So if they want to be different and oppose the norm, they will cheer the heels, and boo the faces….than go ***** about them online. Right now, heels are the cool thing among much of the IWC, and those who can’t let the Attitude Era go.

BQ – Nothing really. No Holds Barred tends to be a bit more aggressive, or more like a brawl.

Source(s): Now I sit back and watch my thumbs down count grow bigger and bigger….71

  • I find their motives to be a lot more relatable than the good guy, and evil is cool. This opinion is likely formed on the basis of me being a bad person, but real people are a lot more like heels than faces.

And there is no difference between the two matches.

  • Who says you don’t cheer the bad guys in “real life”? Let’s see…I have rooted for Lex Luthor, Darth Vader, Maleficent, The Joker, Jason Voorhees (with some particularly annoying victims shut up), Freddy Krueger, Jack Torrance (because Danny annoyed me, but I wish Scatman Crothers had been spared…well, we’ll call it collateral damage), and things like that.

Those are movie villains and not exactly real life, but it’s *entertainment*. Wrestling is sports *entertainment* and I’m sorry, but I find the villains, or heels, more entertaining. I don’t like going with the whole “And goodness perseveres always” because if you’ve lived long enough, you know that’s bullsh*t.

Just because you like the hero doesn’t mean I have to. I like having that little bit of a twisted mind where I can enjoy a little bit of “evil”, especially knowing that it’s not *hurting* anyone in reality.

BQ: I believe they’re the same thing.
