Why does my hard drive space numbers not add up?

I am running an older server with Windows server on it. The machine has physical .Gb drives. I am running RAID and that gives me a total of just over Gb. My C: partition is Gb and I have a storage partition (E:) that is .Gb. When I check the size of all the files on my E: partition it says I have .Gb but in the properties of E: it says I am using .Gb. Where is the other .Gb?

  • It is probably due to the space set aside for your ‘system restores’ and is called ‘shadow storage’. This amount is around % of your HDD if I remember correctly. You can modify this amount if you wish.

If you right-click on ‘command prompt’ and hit ‘run as administrator’ a black box will appear. In the black box type this line copying the words and spaces exactly:

    vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=MB

Then hit enter. You’ll notice that I’ve put the figure of MB or GB, you can have any figure as long as it’s more than MB as this is the size needed to properly save a system restore. I set mine to GB but you can change yours to whatever.. Also if your MBR is denoted by another letter other than C you’ll have to change that also.

  • Really simple answer on this one. try a disk de fragment on your E:, also try checking your partitions by going to administrative tools>computer management> disk management. And have a look around for small Gb ish partitions. I hope this helps, ps there is a freeware called file shredder that i would recommend when using such large arrays as your own, any other help then [email protected].

  • It’s being used as the system resources to operate the whole mess.
