Why has NASCAR had a surge in popularity, while baseball has faded?

  • Because NASCAR has never had a strike because of money. Most NASCAR drivers would race even if they did not get paid. They love what they are doing… its passion. No other sport has that in a majority of its players.
I am not saying all NBA,MLB or NFL players are all money hogs, but a large percentage are.
I think people appreciate the passion NASCAR drivers have for their profession.

  • Well lets see now. The pitcher don’t want the ball so he toss’s it to the catcher, the catcher don’t want it so he lets the batter hit it, the out or infilder don’t want it so they toss it back in to the pitcher and on and on and on. Thats why.

  • People love seeing wrecks……..
NASCAR drivers did go on strike, at the first race in 1970 at Alabama International Motor Speedway (Talladega). The drivers had safety concerns and went on strike that first race, second-string drivers were brought in to run it.

“I do remember that first Dega race. Brickhouse won it and was a fairly good race. Considering the technology on the cars back then, it was a precarious situation going those speeds ( over 2 MPH). Since then the racing industry has made better improvement to eliminate the dreaded symptoms going that fast like restrictor plates, better aero pkgs, and better spring set ups to counter some of the issues back then.

The drivers did strike and NASCAR listened and made improvements later. The race went on because they had obligations and NASCAR could not back out of those obligations thus the race with the second string drivers.

NASCAR did listen back then. It wasn’t the case that every body makes that they broke the drivers union and forced the name drivers back into the cars. NASCAR agreed to make changes before the next DEGA race. At lest that is my recollection of that DEGA race. “
The strike also opened the door for Richard Childress’ first race, driving the legendary #3 made famous by his friend Junior Johnson……….

“Childress’s career in NASCAR’s top levels started auspiciously as a drivers’ strike at Talladega Superspeedway left NASCAR President William France Sr. looking for replacement drivers. Childress was such a driver, and started his first race as a replacement.

By 1971, Childress began racing on the top level as an independent driver, using the number 3 as a tribute to Junior Johnson’s past as a driver. Although he never won as a driver, he had six top-5, seventy-six top-10 finishes, with a career-best of third in 1978.”

  • I think it is a lot more exciting, baseball is ok but I only really watch college-L S U Rules!!!! Nascar fans really get into the sport, they will buy anything with their favorite driver. And most of the time people get along even if your a fan of a different driver. I like all of the drivers out there ,but my favorite is # 24 Jeff Gordon!

    Jeff Gordon Rules !!!!!!!!!

  • I think Nascar is just more known about. When people don’t know about something, and it’s not in their face (ads, commercials, endorsements on common brands, etc.) people will ignore it. Nascar recently broke through a stereotype of “who” should like it, and now people just enjoy it. You see a lot of national coverage, famous drivers, etc. Although I don’t know- has baseball really faded? I live in Boston, so I don’t think it could ever fade around here, and it makes it hard to say what the national average is!

  • People like to see fast cars! Oh and the movie Talladega Nights probably helped with this one too.

  • Baseball is too slow in its pace. NASCAR spends more time talking to the individuals during the event than baseball making it more personal. People can relate to one person (the driver) more than a team.

  • It all has to do with the product. Why are people choosing SUVs over vans? Why are kids starting to drink energy drinks instead of soda?

Being a NASCAR fan myself, or more of a racing fan in general, watching baseball is by far too slow. NASCAR gives you a constant rush, especially if you see a race in person. I think some of the major reasons baseball fans aren’t NASCAR fans is because they either think its “Redneck” or they simply just can’t follow all the action without knowing all the drivers, teams, tracks, etc. I know if I started watching hockey or soccer right now I would probably shut it off due to my ignorance with both sports.

  • The #1 reason is fan accessabilty. No other sport makes their stars available to fans and media like Nascar.Drivers have microphones shoved in their faces after crashing out at 190 mph and are asked to explain what happened. When a picther gives up a 450ft. blast there isnt a reporter waiting in the dugout to ask what went wrong.Drivers sign autographs almost up till the time they strap themselves into their cars.Baseball players sign only at card shows and then for a min. of $50.The fans of Nascar have their favorite drivers based on way more then talent.A very close second to availabilty is we all know what charities and foundations our drivers support and while they make good money driving, they also give back so very very much.

  • I think it’s partly because of the hero factor. Even when you take a team, like a MLB or NFL team for example, most people are fans of the team, but they still navigate and are drawn to one, maybe two, members of the team; be it the quarterback, pitcher, running back, etc. With NASCAR, the driver IS the hero. Fans put their hopes and loyalty into one person and not so much into a franchise. I know the drivers have crews and teammates, but it’s different than in other sports. I’m probably not making much sense, but I know what I’m trying to say if you don’t understand. Anyway, all the reasons like NASCAR is faster and things like that are true too, but in order to be a fanatic in a certain sport, you have to have a hero…and it’s easy to find a hero in NASCAR.

  • Even though Nascar has been around For nearly 60 Years it’s still the younger sport compared to baseball. I believe That many northerners,That wouldn’t have anything to do with it 20 years ago, Are slowly coming around. They are finally seeing that it’s not just a,Southern thang……………………………..… BARRY WHO??? Hammerin’ Hanks My Man! Go BRAVES!!!

  • Baseball has become so boring , even with the players hitting bombs multiple times a night. These games can go 4 hours and never really have any real action, while in Nascar, there is always action. In the pits, on the track, and sometimes a few fists fly or swear words get said on TV by a driver after they have been crashed. We relate more to nascar as everyday we climb in a car, try to get home or to work asap, and when someone crashes into us, we feel the same emotions towards that driver. I have not played baseball in years and do not intend to.

  • no steroids???

  • Not to be mean, but we are becoming more and more ADD.

NASCAR is like football. It’s an event, a holiday if you will. You prep up on Saturday, then you head out to the track at daybreak Sunday and pop open a cold one and put some eggs and bacon on the grill. You spend the day with your friends you haven’t seen all week and just be silly. Then you go and sit with thousands of fans, pulling for your favorite driver while you know most of the people around you are pulling for someone else. Exhausted, you pile into the vehicle and go home and just unwind after a long day. Pretty much the same if you’re there or at home.

Baseball. Meh. What is it 152, 162 games? Every game is just another game. It will be there. If you miss a game.. it really doesn’t matter, you can catch it tomorrow, and probably even against the same team! Unless it was the world series, the games were always on in the background, but never really holding our attention. And the crowds are self defeating. i went to a game last season and there was almost no one there. it was sad.. so much so that i decided it wasn’t worth it, the atmosphere sucked, and i wouldn’t go back. maybe if it were in a small college stadium, but in the lower deck and you have maybe 20 people in a section? not fun and doesn’t draw you into the game. the only reason i’ll watch baseball now is if i can’t fall asleep for some reason..

i love it for what it is.. but that’s exactly what it is.. America’s PASTtime…

  • I like the wrecks in the races and I think the races are exciting to watch. And Baseball has too many players using steriods because they want to break all the good old players’ records.

  • because baseball is boring

  • I’ve noticed alot of people talking about the slow pace and long time period of a baseball game, but have you watched a NASCAR race recently? It seems there’s a caution every few laps, especially at the beginning and end of a race, and the cautions seem to last twenty minutes. Baseball game can last up to four hours, but so can NASCAR races. Some NASCAR races can last close to six hours! I’m not saying that NASCAR is a worse or more boring sport than baseball, but the arguments used could be used to say why baseball is being beat by football right now, too. I think that one has to look no further than how NASCAR became more popular than Indy Car racing. Whereas CART became nothing more than a loose organization of teams with their own agendas, eventually it collapsed on itself and now there’s the two different organizations we have in Indy Car racing today because of it. Meanwhile, NASCAR followed Pete Rozelle’s method that he used to make the NFL the #1 sport in America putting the interests of the League before the individual team and as a result all of NASCAR flourished. Also, what sets apart NASCAR from other racing organizations is their “fan first” attitude. While Indy Car and Formula 1 design their sport to be an ultimate test of technology and driving skills, NASCAR’s interest has always been to be the most down-to-earth, fan-friendly form of racing. Bill France’s design of the Daytona speedway wasn’t to achieve ultimate speed or to make it challenging for the driver, it was built so that all the fans could see the entire track. These are the two main differences between baseball and NASCAR. Baseball has struggled for years to get all of their teams on the same page to advance the common cause of helping the sport flourish. In the meantime they have turned their back on the fans with blackouts and absolutely access to their players. Could you see Barry Bonds being willing to talk to the media after an 0 for 4 day the same way that a NASCAR driver is willing to talk to the media just minutes after a wreck that will cause him to finish way behind in points for that day? By clever marketing, a League before self attitude, and a fan-friendly attitude, NASCAR has flourished while baseball has floundered

  • Basically, baseall is too slow for most people. People are so impatient, they want action NOW instead of spending the afternoon @ the ballpark

  • One, Nascar is once a week.

Two, baseball is slow-paced and appeals to the “older crowd”

Three, Nascar does a better job of promoting its stars

Four, Nobody cares if a driver has the “clear” or the “cream”

Five, you can bring your own beer – biggest and best reason

  • I say to each his own.

If you like baseball, peanuts and cracker jack, enjoy and have a cold one for me!

  • Baseball goes on way too long, game-wise and in season. It irritated me so to hear all these people complaining about the unseasonable weather last month. It’s nature, what are we supposed to do about it? I hope it gets really cold in September and October and all the playoff teams are in the northern parts of the country and Canada and none of the teams have domes. Baseball is a late spring and summer sport, end it in August and have everyone move on to football, America’s real favorite sport.

I can’t say why I like NASCAR specifically, but it’s more exciting. There’s always a chance of an awesome crash, and it does have the presence of a football like atmosphere, people tailgate and just live for it. Baseball doesn’t even sell out the parks until the playoffs.

Love ya, Romie!!! I can’t believe some guy got a tat of you on his calf, that’s dedication, and a little obsessive. I hope you have a fill-in restraining order at the ready, just in case.

  • I live outside of my baseball team’s market so the only way I get to see them is when they play in market (or on FOX vs the Yankees or Red Sox) or pay. With NASCAR I get all the drivers every week.

It’s an All-Star race every week, I don’t miss Harvick because Hamlin is racing. I get the best of the best each week. I don’t have to suffer a KC Baltimore game 18 times a year.

The best part of NASCAR is that the drivers are available to the media and while some are a bit more unpolished that the reat they are more fan friendly that the stick and ball athletes.

Oh and Tony Stewart refuses to do your show, but has still won two CHAMPIONSHIPS. To hell with the karma, Kurt Busch did your show and got punched in the face by BF Jimmy Spence the following Sunday.

  • Nascar is more of an adrenaline rush than baseball is i used to watch baseball religiously and it got to the point where it was so frustrating to watch because its so boring and for all those people who think i am to stupid to understand the game should know i played and watched it for 15 years and i know more than most people do. Nascar is unpredictable you just don’t know whats going to happen around every turn

  • Because people have gotten sick and tired of the whiny overpaid primadonnas in baseball crying for new stadiums and going on strike every couple years and are fed up with obnoxious jerks like Barry Bonds.

  • I think that it is because the of the personalities that are in NASCAR. The drivers are just good guys who are happy to meet with fans. There are a lot basebal players that are awesome guys but it is hard to get to meet them. I also think that people like seeing action an what is better action than seeing a huge car accident that everyone walks away from.

  • Let me see hot chicks and beer plus hp, crashes => boring baseball, you can only push the Red Sox vs Yankees so far. Plus my Rangers always suck!!!!
P.S can you bash Tom Hicks for me please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • .well, I think that people like seeing cars get destroyed and people love speed. that’s that. but then you got baseball, I personally find it a very boring sport to watch, I remember playing it as a kid and loved it, but even than I didn’t like watching it. but NASCAR is all about speed and collisions, when I watch NASCAR, I did not watch it to see who won the race I wanna see if anyone had a crazy crash and I want to catch it live instead of seeing it on the news.
I also like seeing some cars just go really fast you don’t get that everyday where I live.

  • Baseball, although America’s pastime, is exactly that the past. With the revelation of Steroid usage rampant in the MLB, fans are turning off. The reason NASCAR is starting to rise is because of the media coverage. I have heard more about NASCAR this year than I have ever heard about it in my entire life combined. I even signed up for Yahoo Fantasy Racing and not Fantast Baseball this year…and I am actually doing pretty good.

  • the same reason the situation comedy, “my name is earl” is popular. the trailer park population is reproducing at an alarming rate. and with the ever shrinking middle class, more and more of us will start to find rednecks funny

  • ’cause baseball’s a thinking person’s game and the ‘necks aren’t equipped for it.
NECKCAR’s easier for them to follow.

    War Curt dotting A-Rod tonight!

  • because all the people out west and up north are just getting to see the sport up close for a full season. nascar has only had the national tv package for less than a decade so it’s still the new hot thing. i remember when hockey was the new hot thing. not that long ago. also nascar is far superior to soccer, please no comments from capri sun or orange slices, thanks.
