Why is my subwoofer rattling?

I have a 12 inch 12 watt sony xplod hooked up to a 40 watt amp. The bass still goes hard but it does not sound like the deep resonating bass it used to when I first put it in my car and I can hear it rattle every time the bass hits. It is not as noticeable at low volumes but the more you turn the bass up, the more noticeable it is. Today I put an extra coating of caulk around every edge on the inside of the sub box and resoldered the speaker wire to make sure I had a good connection and it is still doing the same rattling. What could the problem be?

  • I have had people come to me with this problem before and the problem was they had a cheap box and the wood had come apart at the joints and was slappin when the bass hit. Does the woofer do it when it is out of the enclosure? It could also be the voice coil. In that case you may as well trash it in most cases.
  • It could be the voice coil delaminating from the former.

  • Your subwoofer is on borrowed time, one day it will smoke. The best advice I can give you is upgrade your subwoofer set up before the sub you have kicks the bucket.
