Why is the banning of displaying cigarettes going to stop young people smoking?

I think it is stupid to ban the display of cigarettes and the government say its to stop encouraging youngsters to start smoking, when if the government really cared about that, they would ban cigarettes all together. There is no way they would do that as it will lose the government millions they make on taxing cigarettes…. I see they dont want to lose the money and are only trying to look like they are concerned about young smokers…. does anyone else out there feel the same??? Alcoholism kills more people in their younger years than smoking but I dont see them taking the same action in order to prevent youngsters becoming a victim of the dreaded devils juice…. the mind boggles and I would appreciate any thoughts out there that think this is a fare thing to do???

  • Most young people can’t afford to buy store-bought cigarettes anymore anyway.

Most youngsters smoke contraband cigarettes supplied thru people they know at half the price.

The same is true of a growing number of smokers who now get their cigarettes from black market traders, as high taxes are driving smokers away from traditional outlets.

Meantime, alcohol is cheaper than bottled water…

  • IT will stop a lot of young people, as the old saying “out of sight, out of mind” will stop them thinking about it. Depends on also whether young people have Adults/role models they are around who smoke, and would supply them with cigarettes. Sadly some adults are poor role models and actually supply underage teenagers or younger with cigarettes.

  • I see where you’re coming from, but these ads glamorize smoking and I believe that’s why they would ban the advertising of cigarettes. On the other hand, you have to be 18 to smoke and 18 year olds should be trusted to make decisions of their own.

  • Its not advertising. Its the store display. Basically making genuine adult law-abiding smokers have to feel awkward and second class when they indulge in their one vice.

I’m a non-smoker and I think its ridiculous and judgemental.

  • Personally I think it’s stupid. It won’t stop people from smoking, all that happens is you can’t see what brands the shop sells/what you can afford to purchase at that moment in time.

  • You know what happens when you ban something and make it seem exciting. ? I am a life time non smoker too,but don’t mind them who wants to do.

  • It won’t. It’s a pointless exercise.

  • does anyone else out there feel the same???
