Why were there so many amputations after the Boston bombing?

I noticed after reading the news that there were many amputations resulting from the bombing.

So it make sense to me that the blast must have been really important. But then why no more death? And why so many amputations? I mean if a bomb can take away so many legs, how come it didn’t kill more people?

Also do you know if some people had other serious injuries on other part of their body, such as on their face, arms, etc?

I hope you get my point.
(P.S: I am not a conspirationist)
Thank you

  • Well, for starters, there weren’t more deaths because there were already a number of EMT’s onsite at the finish line to help with any potential problems for the runners and they had a Med Tent set up nearby. This meant that they were pretty well prepared to deal with control of blood loss which resulted in fewer deaths.
The amputations were a result of the bombs being placed low and under/beside things to partially hide them, which also helped reduce the spread of the blasts. This means that the worst damage was kept to the lower half of the bodies or did more damage to those sitting on the curbs or the sidewalks…or in the case of the poor 8 year old boy, being small and therefore more on a similar level with the bombs.
Granted, I could be mistaken, but this is what I understood coming from the many reports and nes broadcasts I saw and read.

  • The blast was low, and the bombs were filled with shrapnel material.
The damage may have been so extensive that the limbs could not be repaired.

  • The bomb was on the ground. The blast was therefore at a low level. Wounds to lower extremities tend to be less fatal since no vital organs there. The strength of the blast caused extensive soft tissue damage resulting in more amoutations of lower areas.

  • In the Civil War, there was a round projectile bullet called the Minnie Ball, which was named after the Frenchman who designed it – Claude Minet (pronounced Min-aaaay).

When set off with gunpowder as in the pressure cooker bombs used by our terrorist friends these balls spun in a jagged circular motion. They smashed the bones of any limbs they touched rendering the limbs useless. After all bones must exist for a limb to be viable. Technology has not changed that fact.

Although in war Minnie Balls are now illegal, terrorist have no Geneva Convention rules that they respect. When stuffing a pressure cooker bomb with gunpowder and round, metal projectiles, you create something very similar to the Minnie Ball.

I suggest reading any book about amputations during the Civil War to find out more precisely how round, spinning, metal projectiles launched out of a pressurized tube packed with gunpowder works. I’m not a student of physics, but some historians are and have been published. Shelby Foote is a fine example of one.

  • The blast apparently produced a great deal of shrapnel in the form of ball bearings and nails, which blew out horizontally, therefore injuring many people in their lower legs.

  • It was a hoax……………….link to fake blood packs being used…….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHKD4r9CSsE&list=FLIICj3ofH%C2%ADXEtjXLp_UXRraA&index=5

  • Some people had as many as 40 pieces of nails and bearings in a specified area of their bodies. There was so much damage done to the bones, muscle, tissue and skin that it couldn’t be salvageable and rehabilitated with physiotherapy.
