Will home schooling affect benefit money?

Some questions I need answering 🙂
1. Does it have to be a parent? Can a family friend home school me?
2. Will it affect his benefits? He is considered unfit for work due to the fact he has severe OCD, this includes him being unable to leave his house if it’s raining. He gets disability benefits, will they consider him fit to work if he homeschools me?
3. Do you have to purchase appropriate school books or are you able to work online?

Thanks in advance.

  • 1. In the US, most states require your parents or a certified teacher school you.
    2. It may since it proves he can concentrate on a task, but that would be something his case worker and doctor would need to decide depending upon his other circumstances.
    3. Either way. There are online correspondence programs or you can buy your own books. However, you are usually considered enrolled in the sponsoring program instead of homeschooled if you use one and you would follow their rules, curriculum, and schedule.
  • 1. It doesn’t have to be a parent but your parents would need to check the local autority are ok to have you homeschooled.

    2. If you are paying him money it will affect his benefits. He has to register as self-employed and complete a tax return, even ify ou only give him £10 a week. If he schools you over 16hrs pw he will lose a large amount of his benefits. Whatever happens if he is being paid any money at all for anything he has to notify them or it is benefit fraud. It is the income rather than his ability to work that is the problem for benefit purposes however if he’s working over 16hrs pw then it would look a bit dodgy because he’d clearly be capable of sitting at a checkout for 16 hrs too!

    3. You can be home schooled in nyway you like but you would need to be assessed, show progression and enter official examinations, remaining in education full-time until you reach minimu leaving age which would be 18 in the UK now.

If he isn’t a qualified teacher thee’s no point in him home schooling you. He won’t know the education system well enought o get you through your examinations.

Home schooling is usually around £20ph.

  • Which country do you live in?

Depending on local laws, I expect that it will be no problem unless money changes hands, in which case your friend would have to report it as income and it may affect his benefits.

In most countries, parents are ultimately responsible for the child’s education but do not have to do the educating themselves.

I can’t imagine that local laws would require you to use paper books rather than online resources!!

(I’m baffled by Pole Kitten’s various assertions regarding home education in the UK. Absolutely none of the following is true in ANY country of the UK!! “you would need to be assessed, show progression and enter official examinations, remaining in education full-time until you reach minimu leaving age which would be 18 in the UK now.” There is a small crumb of truth in that that the “age of participation” in England has been raised recently to 17 and will be 18 eventually, but that is not a requirement to be in full-time education.)

  • 1. It depends on what state you live in.

    2. Again, it depends on what state you live in.

    3. No, you could purchase your own curriculum, or homeschool for free, using the internet or your local public library.

  • In most states a parent or legal guardian only can homeschool.

    check Alaska’s laws and see what they say;
