Would you recommend practicing driving in a parking lot?

I am about to get my permit and there is an empty parking lot right next to my house, and my mom wants to take me there to “get the feel of the car” and practice simple things like turns and parking and stuff. Have any of you done this? do you agree with her that it makes a difference? Im just curious if it would even make a difference because an empty parking lot is 20x more different than the road and i dont really wanna waste the time if it doesnt help. Thanks!

  • Yes. You learn the basics of the car before you head out on the streets.
  • An empty parking lot is a very good place to start getting a feel for the car. Once you have a good feel for the car, you can move on to roads and paths…etc.

  • that is the best way to learn

  • yes , i know many people that practice in parking lots , in fact thats how my parents learned to drive . its not a waste of time & its very helpfull in order to park & learn how a car feels around any area .

  • if its a empty parking lot contact your local police department. tell them that who you are and that you will be with a fully licensed driver. and ask them about your intentions of using this parking lot. for driving and practicing. obviously threes buildings on this lot. if the, owner drives bye and sees you on his property thee rs something still called liability insurance. for instance if a small child ran in front of you and you hit the child or it was killed your responsible. i know you say its a empty lot. it do sent mean that someone on a bike or Skate board wont go flying threw there.

  • Absolutely! What better way to get the feel for the vehicle and learn to better gauge your distances without danger of hitting someone.

  • Most people start in a parking lot, very common!

  • No one should drive on the road until they are very comfortable driving in a parking lot.
