Can I drill into the ceiling if there is a vent there?

We moved into a new condo and need to put up curtains – almost foot windows with a hour gas station outside them makes for some bright nights right now!

The problem is that we’ll need to drill into the ceiling (well it’s more of an overhang type thing, but same idea), but there are vents on both ends of the windows. Will we be able to drill into the vents? And will it be a problem if we drill into them? Also do we need a different kind of plug or screws for that? Or would the vents at least be far enough away from the drywall material to get screws in without having to drill into the vents?

Any insight is appreciated!!

Update:

Should point out that it’s almost feet wide so we have no choice but to drill a rod in (spring loaded don’t come that long..)

Oh and we own the place so no worries about putting holes, as long as they’ll actually work!

  • I would mount it with some /” self drilling sheet metal screws. Screw through drywall and into vent.

  • The vent box is probably framed all around the edges with x material. The sheetrock is probably /”thick, so come in at least ” from any edge and you should be on wood framing. You could utilize a stud-finder to determine where framing edges are, and a tiny twist will give you core samples, and a small wire probe will help you investigate with minimal damage which can easily be covered up.

  • you could, alternative is a nice spring loaded rod and then you might get your deposit back, it has no fasteners
