  • There are ways to prevent a child from unlocking their car seat.

Do the “coat trick”- it is very easy to do and will prevent a child from unlocking themselves.

Get a slightly baggy shirt with buttons or that has a zipper. Put this on your child without doing up the buttons or the zipper. Put your child in their seat. Pull the coat to the outside of the harness so that once buckling, you can do the buttons up. This way, the harness straps and buckle will be underneath the shirt.

Here is a video that shows what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4f3gjicS…

You could also try putting a piece of velcro on the buckle. Use the scratchy side of the velcro as most children do not like the feel of it.

You could also get a piece of cardboard. Fold it around the buckle and stick a little bit of duct tape on the back of it.

Also, get her something to do in the vehicle. Get some soft books or a soft toy that she can have while in the car. Have toys specifically for the car. In other words, you could buy a new toy that she can only play with in the car. This will make that toy special to her and may distract her from unbuckling her car seat.

And remember that your actions will speak much louder than your words. Act scared when you find her seat unlocked. As soon as you find out that she is unbuckled, pull over to a safe spot on the road, buckle her back up and tell her, “Do not unlock your car seat as that is dangerous.”

Make sure that your daughter knows that this is not a game.

  • Buy a cover that blocks the buckle I make a cover for the harness clip but in the UK they don’t have the clip on the seat
